Sometimes A Drink Of Tailing Pond Water Is Just A Cigar...

....And Sometimes It Is Something Else Entirely.

From a recent editorial in the 'Northern Miner':

...The meeting the next day (after the disaster began) between Imperial president Brian Kynoch and affected residents in Likely, B.C., had its moment of dark comedy, too, when a feckless Kynoch told worried residents that of course he would drink the water from the tailings facility, "once the solids come out." It’s about as meaningful as saying that of course you’d play Russian roulette — once the bullets are taken out of the gun.

The entire editorial, which is both reasoned and measured is worth reading. The fact that it actually sees Imperial as one of the better Canadian companies in the game is an important point when it comes to pseudo-self regulatory policies of governments bent on bringing such outfits to a mountain top near them.

________
Laila was all over this yesterday as well...
Of course, the unintended consequences of pseudo-self regulation has caused some real problems in other situations here in Canada not so long ago also....

why spend the money on tailing ponds if the worst that can happen, and it does happen, is a slap on the wrist of the perps. why not just send the slurry off to Surrey via the Fraser River
