Regarding the image above of 19th century writing desks or 'slopes' as they were known...

From the mind of the estimable Mr. Gibson:

"Bronte sister laptops!"

Stick that in your steampunk genre and smoke it!

  1. Makes me remember those "old school" school desks made of wood and cast iron with a sloped lid on a hinge, and a flat space with a hole for an ink well, I seem to remember there were a few of those floating around at Monterey.

  2. Indeed there were!

I remember them well, especially the hole where the ink was supposed to go given how left-handed unfriendly the positioning was.

  3. Grade 1 - Sidaway School Richmond - grade 1 wooden desks were bolted to the floor, tip up lids and of course the hole for the ink bottle (which grade 1's were not allowed to have!)

made "Duck and cover" a very painful affair! Oh those sore heads!

We're going to have posts about school desks...I can feel them coming.

Now my kids are going to have to agree that do more than complain about politics and the weather around here...
