Leaked audio from a private event has reportedly captured the US vice-president, JD Vance, mocking Canada for apparently capitulating in a trade deal and taunting the prime minister, Mark Carney, for trying to “out-tough” Donald Trump.The recording, which was reportedly made at a fundraiser and shared with the Canadian Press, comes in the last stretch of a difficult negotiation in which the US president has threatened to impose 50% tariffs on CanadaAccording to the Canadian Press, (U.S. Vice President) Vance is heard in the audio telling a room of supporters in Southampton, New York, that Carney is a “very sweet guy” and that he gets along with him well. But he also says Carney “comes in and puffs his chest out and says: ‘I’m going to, like, out-tough Donald Trump.’”Vance says: “It’s hilarious because Carney presents this as some victory for Canada when fundamentally, like, they climb down on a lot of issues.”...

I guess Mr. Carney now knows how Mr. Zelensky felt when he, too, was subjected to inane and inflammatory utterances from the hillbilly with all the thieleological (sic) elegies that tech-bro money can buy.
Or some such thing.

The problem facing Carney is the vast ignorance about Canada by American politcans, most haven't a clue about Canada, especially one Mr. Vance and Mr. Trump.
ReplyDeleteThe believe Canada is some sort of historic anomaly, created by the UK, instead of Canada always being here and several times in the past defeated the American armies invading Canada to annex the country.
What we are facing today from the Excited States, as their empire crumbles into the history books is asymmetrical warfare, where the USA wants Canada to be a vassal buffer state and nothing more.
Sadly, one Brian Mulroney, sold Canada down the river with free trade, which in the end lulled Canada into economic stupor, with corporations grown fat off the governments largesse, while the middle class was being decimated by the closing of Canada's once great industrial base.
With Trump and his idiocy, Canadians have had enough, especially and now are fighting back.
I think Premier Wab Kinew has the pulse of the nation, while Carney as the pulse of the economy and the two do not mesh.
If Carney's deal is seen by Canadians as a sell out, the Liberals will be doomed by a vast hatred those involved.
Not knowing the deal at this time, but the song hints by Kinew, I don't think this deal id going to fly.
Oh, our Mr. Eby has shown his true colours, as always, cowardice and habitually late for the party is hardly anywhere to be seen.
That being said, I wish Carney let it be known aloud if the American 50% tariffs are put on Canadian goods, then a 50% export tax on oil, electricity and potash are in order.
From what I have read, that would pollaxe the American economy and seriously effect food production in 2027.
Time to be the Canada we were in 1943/44/45.

With Wab Kinew's unprecedented attack on Trump earlier, my "spidy senses" told me something was off and I guess that message reached Carney's team who probably tipped him off, knowing he was rather fearless.
Wab must have been a scrum half because her certainly acted like one, both fearless and deeply annoying! I wish our "Casper Milque Toast premier show something.
And of course, Vance, plying the part of the Wee P, did not help and he reminds me of a game I played many years ago when parking was free at Jericho Beach, we were losing badly against an American team, in our inter-lock games, and one of their top players crossed the try line and did a football style victory dance. The great late Scotty Dowel and myself (two very ugly forwards) nailed him in an ambulance job tackle and I remember the American coach yelling, "I told you to touch the f***ing ball down."
I see a bit of that with Vance's sheer stupidity. The ghosts of Canada's past are smiling.
For those down south "The worst is yet to come."
Note MP Jovani slinking around in the background feeding Trump, Vance, and Greer information while the official negotiators are working. He should be called in front of Parliament and forced to answer under oath what he’s been telling them.

Canada does supply some Americans with electricity. Double that cost and Americans will not be happy. As a result of trump defunding the ACA exchanges not only have many Americans lost their healthcare but smaller rural hospitals closed. For those who can still afford health care that might end. Do they pay the electric bill or medical bill

Carney has signed a number of trade agreements with other countries. Expect more. The Us is a nation not only in moral decline but militarily-not feeding the military adequately is not going to work. Other branches of the US military have had a substantial increase in members applying for release on the basis of objections to the bombing of civilians and civilian infrastructure
After seeing today’s headline “ Canada threatens toilet paper shortage to bring Trump to his knees”, it looks like a good way to deal with them.

What is a toilet paper shortage to a man who wears diapers? I am sure many in the USA still have their hoarded toilet paper stash from the days of Covid.
DeleteThe NDP now has three royalty numbers on the same budget line, and two different stories about how the error happened.
ReplyDeleteThe Ministry of Energy says Budget 2026 overstated natural gas royalties because of unit and currency conversions. Nancy Olewiler at Simon Fraser University says they failed to subtract transportation and processing costs from the plant-inlet price. That is the price used to calculate the royalty cheque every month.
Those are not the same explanation.
Then there are the totals. This government has admitted $292 million a year, about $1.5 billion over five years. Business in Vancouver put it at $500 million a year, $2.5 billion over five years. Olewiler has said it could reach $3.5 billion over five years, and that the government’s figure is the low end of what she has seen.
David Eby cannot put three royalty forecasts in the same fiscal plan.
Only one of them goes into the books.
The September update is the next official number. Put the working papers on the table with it. Show the conversion the ministry now cites. Show the plant-inlet deduction Olewiler cites. State which figure replaces the Budget 2026 line. A press release is not a fiscal plan.
