Mr. Falcon's Latest Logic Pretzel.

HowDumbDoesHeThinkWe
AreVille

The day before yesterday an oversized commercial vehicle, travelling south after coming out of the Massey Tunnel on Highway 99, slammed into the Highway 17 overpass. This resulted in a southbound closure of 99 which, as you might expect, caused traffic to back up into and through the tunnel.

Not one to miss an opportunity to exploit an accident in the name of political expediency, the current leader of the soccer team party rushed to the scene with a member of his caucus from the other side of the tunnel and posted the following:

Hmmm....

Does that mean that there wouldn't be an overpass south of the tunnel for massive trucks to accidentally smash into if the free soccer enterprise team party were to revive their massive traffic infusion plan?

Perhaps we should re-roll the tape, or artist conception of that plan, as it were, to check:

Gosh.

Do you see what I see in the bottom portion of the image (i.e. south of Mr. Falcon's ten lane bridge over the river?

No place for a 'pedestrian' to stand to do photo ops?

No dedicated side walk way.

No dedicated cyclist route.

Falcon said the highway should be lowered beneath the overpasses so there would be a huge dippity dip to endure at 110kph, I thought it would be a lot easier just to have the trucks run on flat tires!

NVG--

Fine folks like the good Mr. Falcon want to us to think that this is the hottest summer, (for ever and) ever.

Of course, if things don't change it is likely that in, say, 10 years we will look back on this summer fondly as the coolest summer, likely by far, of the last decade.

_______

Bruce--

It would appear that Mr. Falcon has now conjured up a double reversed logic pretzel - with a dip on the side.

It was actually, Mr.Falcon, while he was former Premier Campbell's Minister of Transportation, that has created this mess, with their kow-towing to the trucking industry.

have you had enough Falcon, goosestepping to Campbell's tune allowed bigger, longer, heavier and higher trucks to operate on BC highways, further giving the trucking industries massive subsidize by operating on public roads.

With the laws governing transgressing the current "weak as water laws" is just abetting the trucking industries greed.

If an oversize truck hits an overpass, the driver should get a 1 year driving ban and the truck and goods it was carrying seized and sold at auction to defray the costs. This certainly would make a driver think twice taking an oversized load.

As for Falcon's 10 lane bridge, pure politcal penis envy, nothing more, to move gridlock about 3 km into Richmond.

But what must be remembered, "blacktop" politics wins votes in BC and Global Warming be damned.

We already have too many cars and too many highways and bridges in my view. Something is causing the planet to heat up just a bit.

Chuck, et al, in BC 'Rubber on Asphalt" politics hold sway, where 8 lane tunnels and 10 lane bridges win votes.

The government purposely continues building with a discredited (internationally it is) light metro system that has achieved nothing and why the NDP via metro taxpayers are spending $11 billion to extend it 21.7 km because it will not take cars off the road.

Can't have that in BC you know!

Our universities do not teach "Urban Transport" and the majority of planners and engineers graduate without any knowledge of transit mode and history and focus on vote getting "rubber on asphalt" solutions.

The NDP, the biggest Global Warming hypocrites in the world do nothing as the province burns and one tires of unelected Premier Eby wringing his hands as BC burns to a crisp.

At least Falcon's "Change-a-Name" party are more up front with climate change denial, at least the voter can make an in formed opinion.

Sadly both Falcons "Change-a-name" party and the NDP are fiddling, while BC burns. A sad testament about our two main politcal parties, desperate to get the "rubber on asphalt" vote.

As EE points out, things are, indeed, dire.

I don't thing we should give up, however.

At least not completely.

We be jamming, indeed.

If only it were Econo (with. M. Watt at the helm of an electric tour van, of course...)

We may be done like burnt toast but all you have to do is scrap the burnt stuff off, put on a little butter and you're good to go. B.C. has survived a lot of things/messes and survived and then even thrived.
Some may prefer to blame the NDP for not doing enough or anything at all regarding climate change, but the last time I looke we had about 5 million people living in B.C. and the world's population is about 8 billion,. Lets not blame the NDP.
Best laugh of the day when Falcon suggested the highway be lowered. PLlease, please, will some one explain to him that when you lower roads in sections, when it rains and rains all the water gathers at the lowest point and then no one can get through the high water and its grid lock.

Now as to the over passes being too low, Kevin go have a look in the mirror All that infrastructure was build by the B.C. Socreds, B.C. Liberals, etc and whatever you are naming yourselves to day, oh right B.C. United. You simply built the over passes too low. didn't think about the future.

E.E. maybe on to someting regarding trucks hitting an over pass. It ought not to be a free pass and have ICBC pay for the repairs of the over pass.
Seizing the truck and auctioning off the goods, penalizes the persons whose goods are on the truck, They may not belong to the trucker, so lets make things more difficult for the other "victims". Like the idea of suspending their drivers' licenses for a year. Training and testing needs to be improved and perhaps a graduated system before one receives their license.
Perhaps a new protocol needs to be implemented, drivers have to walk around their truck to ensure the dump part of the truck is lowered
or simply a small light in their truck advising the dump part of the truck is still "up".
