My Morning Rides.

A few podcasts I've really enjoyed on the morning ride into work recently...

Christopher Guest on Maron - it turns out that there really is a method in his mad(cap)ness.

Jonathan Goldstein and Heavyweight are back! - The first episode is a touching one about JG's longtime nemesis Gregor's Mom.

The MoCo's Frontburner, which is more often miss than hit for me, had an excellent recent episode on the incredible life and times, including how he's dealing with the coming end of his life with dementia, of Robert Munsch.

That is all for now, although, to be clear, I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and, despite the changing of the seasons, it is not dying.

The light I mean.

As for the ear worm in the sub-header...Not going to touch that one.

That Goldstein piece hit far too close to home!

Gar--

Indeed. I'm thinking of sending away for a couple Etta's art bottles for Christmas presents

I played a few games of rugby for the Red Lions, at Carnarvon park back in the day. The field houses usually had a caretaker living in them and made sure there was plenty of hot water for our bruised bodies after the game.

At Quilchina park the lovely couple living in the field house always had copious amounts of hot tea after the game!

It was a different and much simpler time!

Anon-Above--

There still some caretaker stuff going on in some of the parks I think.

Heckfire, Justin McElroy has probably ranked them.

Although all provinces have seen deteriorating revenues in the first quarter of the fiscal year, B.C.’s is the worst compared to its GDP, he said.

B.C. is accumulating debt faster than all other provinces. Its growth in spending is higher than average, fuelled largely by health-care costs. Its deficit as a percentage of revenue is worse than during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the economy shut down. Its spending has become completely decoupled from its revenues. And it is on a meteoric rise in debt burden (the NDP will have tripled the debt since taking power by 2028) unlike any of the country’s four major provinces. The cost to service the debt is rising to concerning levels.

Point taken Anon-Above.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Most of the Park caretakers are now gone. At my local park, Slocan Park, it is a detriment. There's more vandalism, and the place isn't taken care of as well. Back in the early oughts, I too was a member of a rugby team called the Rogues, our regular practice field was Braemar Park. It also benefited from a full time care-taker that did a great job.

Deficit Hysteria is bunk, but it is useful for rallying the low information voters.

More the way the message was delivered this time Gar that I responded to.

Yes, the Red Lions practiced at Braemar Park, when I played for them 1978/86. Braemar Park was home for the 3rd's and Douglas Park home for the 2nd 's.

Used to play both games when we were short - god I get winded just thinking about that today!

The Shaughnessy Hospital, used to have a sign entering their emergency ward, "Rugby Players shower and take off boots before entering".

EE--

Such a sign should be everywhere within a 2 km radius of where you bloody rugby players hang out!

Braemar was a great field because G.F. Strong rehab was across the street, awfully convenient!

Yes, I have forgotten about that and on sunny days, those at GF Strong were wheeled out to watch a game.

In the caretakers/change room house, there was a relic from the past (no not me), but an early Jacuzzi type affair with a large galvanized tub, and a reworked electric motor powering the remains of a Seagull outboard motor in a cage, providing at what could be best described as a early attempt of a hot tub.

Rube Goldgurg affair it was, and it seemed to have been unused for many years, probably for safety reasons.

Braemar was also used for field lacrosse in the summer months.

Did not know about the field lacrosse!

Must have been more than a few balls that made their way into yards and, hopefully not, windows of the nearby houses on Willow and 26th given that it is not a big park/field.
