In an opinion piece titled 'Can Canada Survive Donald Trump' for Bloomberg News, Francis Wilkinson writes.
...In the household of North America, one inhabitant has taken the momentous decision to empower a lie-based political movement led by a career fraudster — long after his authoritarian ambitions and violent means were laid bare. Whether this act of political suicide evolves as a murder-suicide is of more than passing interest to the US’s northern domestic partner. The consequences of US failure cannot be contained within US borders. As a direct result, African children who were alive on Jan. 19 are dead today. Summary executions, without even a pretense of law, have become US policy in the Caribbean Sea. Putin continues slaughtering Ukrainians while cashing dividends from a shrewd political investment. China is better-positioned for power.Canada’s precarious state is not the direst consequence of US political degradation. But it’s an all-but-impossible one to rectify. Joined at the hip to the US, Canada can only hope that Trump doesn’t continue to hold its trade hostage, or spill authoritarian values and violence over the border...
Personally, I like the slightly more 'collective' Cake version of the tune made famous by the incomparable Ms. Gaynor...

Mr. Wilkinson's piece is good, deep and well researched... Essentially, his thesis is that our best chance of surviving, intact, is that the US itself does not completely collapse under the weight of the current authoritarian regime.

Well, I hope so too, because some of us can never say good bye. (turn around you fool(s))
and you're right, that Cake version slaps!
Typical American blather. The big question should be not "Can Canada survive", rather "Can the USA survive"?
It will take time but Canadians have answered the question, without being asked. Slow but certain steps.
I am now of the belief, except for business (which is diminishing) and family affairs, travel to the USA should be seen as a treasonous act. Well, maybe just a little bit.
The thought of sunning in Florida, Arizona or the "palm" should be changed to places south of the Excited States and we should be encouraging our own businesses by shopping Canadian and buying Canadian.
Holiday in Canada, god knows we have the 2nd largest country in the world so let's explore it!
We should teach real Canadian History, warts and all and not the sanitized politically correct tripe that passes for history in today's world.
We have to bring back the entrepreneur and the sole proprietor and reduce our very ponderous bureaucracy.
And politcans must be loyal to Canada and not developers and land speculators.
We need a vision for the future without the USA, which no one has provided because the alternative will be a replay of Austria's 1938 Anschluss only this time, Canada being swallowed by a very corrupt and evil USA.
Forget "elbows up" folks, the Americans now find that rather cute and we must knee then in the groin and in old rugby parlance"F***'em over big time" and "put the boot to 'em".
we must knee then in the groin and in old rugby parlance"F***'e
Rugby is too rough a game for most people; they prefer the predictability of north American 'foot 'ball.
Elbows up! Try wallets open as Canadian business has gouged us for staying at home.
eg; a hotel room in Victoria was asking $500 a night for a room that we paid $170 a night in March!!
Lets not forget it costs less to fly to Europe or Mexico than across Canada.
Grown in USA groceries with Maple leaf flags; give me a break!!
Hardly supporting the team is it?
TB
Aye rugby is a hard game, but not too hard for Canadian women, but I digress.
Rugby is a thinking game, a game of true teamwork and a game of "blood, sweat, toils, and tears" and that is what we need today.
Hockey is a rich man's game today as it politics and we need to bring it back to the rugby pitch, where a foul is quickly dealt with by the referee or by a burly prop forward.
It is time to stop being polite with the USA and start being the real "mean and nasty" the Americans are so afraid of and moaning about expensive motel/hotel rooms or the cost of flights will get us nowhere.
Did Canadians give up at Vimy, Juno, Orotona or at Canada's version of the battle of Thermopylae, Kapyong - NO. There are mass graveyards of Canadians who did not give up in Europe and Asia.
What is happening now is asymmetrical warfare by the USA and if we loose, we loose everything.
If you run for office, I'd vote for you. Like the platform especially "FxxKem over big time. Shouldn't be that hard. We do have a few devious minds in Canada.
Canada can go on its own if we organize it properly. Countries, ours included simply need to start ignoring the U.S.A. especially trump, you know fxxk with his inflated ego and small brain.
Trump/USA talk about an iron dome and Canada ought to pay port of it. NO, absolutely not. trump is a con man, sexual predator, bankrupted 6 times. Not a cent. We ought to cancel the purchase of jets also. Sweden has some nice new ones and they work very well, I've read some even think they are better than the F-whatevers. We simply out wait them. Yes there will be a decline in the economy but we won't be the 51st State. We need to go out and sell Canada's products and make new alliances. We might even run some tv ads attacking trump and his. Foreigners are not permitted to donate money to the U.S.A. for elections, but ads advising we're not going to because 51 Canada needs to build its military and quick and provinces are going to have to stop asking money from Ottawa, oh and we would be paying more taxes and so would a few billionaires. trump is not going to give up so we either learn to fight back or become part of a fascist entity.
At some point trump's storm troopers are going to do something really stupid and the country will turn on him or they start shooting at each other. Of course Venezula may decide to take some action which will throw the U.S.A. in a tizzy.
