The lede of a front page piece by Debra Kamin in today's NYTimes (web archive link):
In the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, nearly an hour from the closest city, a small group of homesteaders is building an exclusive community from scratch.
Applicants to the community are screened with an in-person interview, a criminal-background check, a questionnaire about ancestral heritage and sometimes even photographs of their relatives.
The community’s two architects — a classically trained French horn player who has livestreamed his own sex videos, and a former jazz pianist arrested but not charged for attempted murder in Ecuador — say they must personally confirm that applicants are white before they can be welcomed in...
The story is an excellent bit of investigative reportage.
However, the Grey Lady's headline writer and, presumably, the editors who approved it just couldn't stop themselves from throwing a phantom 'objective journalism' punch in the subheader:
...Housing rights experts say a community restricted to white residents is illegal, but the creators believe they could win a potential challenge in court in the current political climate...
Sheesh.

Always lead with the race card.
The United States has always been a racist country and in fact, South Africa's Apartheid system was a direct copy of US practice.
This inbred flaw in American society does not just linger in today's world, but it is returning with a vengeance. The push for "Chartered School" movement has more to do with segregation than better education.
The United States of America is fast heading into a cathartic moment, either continue with a liberal democratic society or return to a repressed, racist, corrupt past, where the rule of law is replaced by mob violence, lynchings, and segregation.
This started with Regean and has continued under the Bushes and now Trump. Sadly the likes of Mulroney and his ilk, have tried to Americanize Canada, which has failed so far and with Trump has made this largely toxic with Canadian society.
We are living in dangerous times, where politcal regression is becoming more and more common.
As I have said before, my crystal ball is growing very dark indeed, with fell actions and foul plans.
Wondering if any one around here will dare say a word about the 2.3 million people being held in a cage, without food, water, or electricity, all while being indiscriminately bombed into oblivion--?
I attended grades 1 and 2 in North Carolina back in the early 1960s. Needless to say, the elementary school I attended was not integrated. The "colored folks' kids" lived in their own part of town and attended their own school. I recall that there was a girl in my grade 2 class who was suspected to be part "colored". She endured a great deal of abuse from other children in the school. I have no idea what happened to her. Your post today, Ross K, brings back those sad memories.
It's a separate topic and I suspect you are trying to deflect the issue.
In 1978, I played rugby for the Vancouver Fijians Rugby Club and was easy to spot on the field. I still have my Fiji jersey - BULA!
This would have been impossible in the USA at the time.

The thing is, that stuff should be over. Hopefully, in the more purplish North Carolina it still is.

Most interesting!
To be fair though, in most of the US by the late '70's things were much better in that regard
(thanks for the troll exposure above)

Actually, it started with Nixon, and his so-called "Southern Strategy" Some would even say it started back in the late Eighteen Hundreds when Southern politicians forced an end to Reconstruction.
