It would appear that US'ian Democratic leaders are desperately attempting to hold on to a center that no longer even exists.
Mike the Mad Biologist, who lives and (still) works (I think/hope) in Washington DC, enumerates and critiques their strategy:
1) Vote against Trump’s legislation. This is good, even though too many Democratic senators have voted to confirm Trump’s nominees–those nominees would have passed anyway, but telling voters his nominees are bums is good.It’s not much of a plan, but it’s what they’re going with. It’s a ‘good’ plan in the sense that the leadership and their consultants can’t really be blamed–if it fails, they can just blame economic improvements or ‘the left’ for not clapping loudly enough.2) Stand back and let everything, including the economy, go to shit. This is largely in Trump’s hands and he seems to be doing a ‘good’ job of it. Of course, if you’re one of those people whose life has gone to shit, and Democrats could have tried to do something, you might feel differently!3) When things are bad enough, voters will somehow, in an unfavorable media environment, realize that it’s all Trump’s and Republicans’ faults, and then they will vote accordingly.
So.
There you have it - the Democratic Party braintrust has decided to do little more than wait until everything turns really, really bad such that the voters smarten up and sweep them back into the power center.
But, here's the thing...
The current regime has already demonstrated that they will put thugs and the troops on the streets of two major US'ian cities for no good reason at all.
Given that, why should the braintrust expect that the regime won't just double the public thuggery everywhere that certain 'types' of voters must be intimidated such that they don't show up at the polls next November?

The Democrats seem to be lost in some sort of hazy without direction. There doesn't appear to be any central planning or what direction they will be going and what various state organizations are going to do. trump and his gestapo just keep invading cities, arresting people, deporting people. Don't the Dems understand they too will be taken aim at and jailed. I've been waiting for the Republicans to start arresting Democratic politicians. It took Hitler to turn Germany into a fascist 52 days. Trump might take a bit longer but he'll get there. If we get lucky Trump might exit stage left but then there will be Vance. just what are the De,ocrats doing and where are they.
The problem for the Democrats is the same problem that the "Wee P" ignored, they are yesterday's politcal party and they still reside somewhere south of 9-11.
The long running Republican?Tea party/MAGA coup d'etat started with Regan and his planned destruction of the middle class in the USA.
Regan also overturned rules for the media to compel them to tell the truth and that result is all too evident. In the USA today, it seems Free speech means you are allowed to lie freely.
And we all know: "a lie told often enough, the public perceive it to be true.
As I write this, the Trump gestapo is raiding Democratic senators/governors and past Trump cabinet members such as john Bolton and soon, like his best bud Putin, many people will begin to "fall out of windows".
With trump at the helm, there will be no honest 2026 midterms and certainly there will be no honest 2028 election, as the USA has now taken the terminal dive to becoming a Fascist/Communist state, complete with oligarchs enabling the ruling Czar; secret police (ICE) black bagging undesirables; and a population willing to be subservient to power.
Canadians take note: You are deemed inferior by Americans, if they actually understand that there are Canadians and in the American mind, their quazi religious fervor of a manifest destiny, they will invade Canada and the only way to stop that is to have "nukes" because in the near future, those with "nukes" will remain independent and those without, adios.

Of course, the braintrust, is betting that many of those left-leaning negatives will come home to their 'center' because they will have nowhere else. Clearly, that strategy did not work in the swing states last November.

Mike's point in his post is that the braintrust, which is pushed, hard, by the big money donors and the consultants who ultimately receive the latter group's' largesse, do have a plan that point directionally back to the center.
The problem is that, for all the reasons you note, and many more, it is a crappy plan that is based on a political playbook so atavastic that it couldn't even beat the washed up version of the Gerald Ford's Republicans, circa 1976.

I think the perception that the Democrats are doing nothing results from a fight using traditional tools against a non-traditional threat. Traditional tools don’t work.
There’s a reason that what Trump and his sycophantic thugs are doing to the U.S. is frequently compared to historical events in Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union. It’s because there is no historical comparison available from the U.S. What’s happening now is unprecedented.
Fight in Congress? They’re outnumbered. Fight in the courts? Trump has stacked the deck, it’s too slow in any case against the steamrolling assault, and he’s just been ignoring the law anyway. Petition the Justice Department? You’re kidding. Rely on the press to sound the alarm? There you go joking again. Thus that deer in the headlights look on the Democratic leadership, and the sense that they are weak and ineffective.
There may be one hole in Trump’s armour, and he drilled it there himself. The economy. If enough of the electorate are looking at high prices and lost income because of factors like tariffs that can be tied directly to Trump, then the midterm elections, even given Republican gerrymandering and voter suppression, could put the brakes on the Trump juggernaut.
The damage Trump has done by then will be enormous and will take a long time (if ever) to reverse. That’s if the Dems win. If they lose again Trump’s gang will never leave office. He’s signalled that already multiple times.
In that eventuality there will be other comparisons made, and they will involve what regimes in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union did to their neighbours. I believe Evil Eye’s assertion above that Canadians are deemed by Americans to be inferior is accurate for a large segment of America (certainly the segment that coincidentally votes for Trump), although we shouldn’t feel isolated in that regard; American exceptionalism treats every “alien” the same way. We just happen to be conveniently near at hand and ripe for invasion.
Pay real close attention to those midterms folks, we have a lot at stake.

I hate to be tiresome but this coup d'etat (and this is what is is) has been long in planning. First, you destroy the middle class (check); then you destroy the education system (check); then you create a fake religion, such as the Evangelicals who believe Jesus was white as snow (check again); then you create fear like letting 9-11 happen (double check); you erode rights (check) and finally find a popular dupe to lead the take over (triple check) and before you know it, what was once the USA is now a dystopian wasteland of the ignorant and the privileged elites.
The only thing to keep this going is war, as one President Putin is so aptly doing.
If there are midterms? Follow what Trump is saying, no elections due to civil disturbances!
