Another day, another story on how the policies of Mr. Trump have led to a significant tourism slump in the United States.
This one is from the Associated Press that starts like this:
This one is from the Associated Press that starts like this:
Tourism in Las Vegas is slumping this summer, with resorts and convention centers reporting fewer visitors compared to last year, especially from abroad, and some officials are blaming the Trump administration’s tariffs and immigration policies for the decline. The city known for lavish shows, endless buffets and around-the-clock gambling welcomed just under 3.1 million tourists in June, an 11 per cent drop compared to the same month in 2024. There were 13 per cent fewer international travelers, and hotel occupancy fell by about 15 per cent, according to data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority...
...Mayor Shelley Berkley said tourism from Canada -- Nevada’s largest international market -- has dried up from a torrent “to a drip.”..
...Travel agents in Canada said there’s been a significant downturn in clients wanting to visit the U.S. overall, and Las Vegas in particular. Wendy Hart, who books trips from Windsor, Ontario, said the reason was “politics, for sure.” She speculated it was a point of “national pride” that people were staying away from the U.S. after U.S. President Donald Trump said he wanted to make Canada the 51st state.“The tariffs are a big thing too. They seem to be contributing to the rising cost of everything,” Hart said...
Now, I have no doubt that national pride and tariffs are factors.
But.
To carry on with the anecdotes for the moment...
Many folks I know including, especially, friends with more pigment in their skin then mine, have mentioned that a major reason they are not travelling south across that 'artificially drawn line' is because they don't want to be hassled, have their devices scanned, be detained, or worse.
In other words, many Canadians are not willing to put themselves in harm's way just so they can buy cheap gas and/or gorge themselves at the Circus Circus buffet.
Assuming, of course, that the latter is still a 'thing'.

It turns out that what happens in Vegas, is also happening in the rest of the US... https://www.sfgate.com/hawaii/article/hawaii-travel-visitors-summer-decline-20383620.php
Canadians to USA, "We can't stop here, it's bat(shit) country." h/t HST
This story is being addressed by several people on You Tube, especially the Guard the Leaf chap.
But, I think the bigger story about Vegas is, that it is fast becoming a yesterday's town, a massive tourist trap with pieces as large as Trump's ego.
Crossing the border is also a concern as I know of one acquaintance who was turned back and was told he was lucky not being "black bagged".
Going to the USA has long been off my "to do" list as I need to be no further than a maximum of 5 hours from a Canadian hospital.
Gone are the days biking to the Reef on a Sunday evening, with a wave to the border types, listening to good tunes, drinking beer, doing the tabs and waking up in a hedge early Monday morning!
Haven't been to the U.S.A. since they demanded we have a passport. after 911. Now it is simply too crazy there. also I'm not going to spend a nickel in that country given the President wants to imvade Canada for our water and minerals. He's a piece of garbage. It isn't just him, its the people who
Ivoted him into office. It wasn''t as if he wasn't' clear what he planed to do. Many said they voted for him because they thought he'd improve the economy. Like how stupid were those voters. He had filed bankruptcy 6 times.
I'm still not purchasing things from the U.S.A. and it really isnt that difficult. I have found tooth paste and mouth wash made in Canada. No longer purchase Texas rice. India's rice is just fine. The salads which are prepared in containers, well the B.C. farmers certainly got busy and theirs is just great. I now eat salads again. I buy them at the local grocery store and that store has also brought in food from other sources. i.e. Classico pasta sauce used to take up most of the room on the shelf. Now we have Canadian and Italian pasta sources and the American brand just doesn't have the space on the shelves now.
I think the next thing to hit Americans are the tariffs. A discussion on the news was about Home Depot going to increase their prices. Sounds like keeping prices low isn't working any more.
One news item also reported on the impact of firing all those park rangers. One sheriff said he might close the park because of the injuries, garbage, and volunteers could not keep up the work nor could the county afford the cost of doing it. It was an amazing natural park, so there goes tourist dollars.
Just on the telly, over 50% of the American population still do not know that they are paying the tariffs and still believe we are!!
Like many Canadians I sent a letter to Senator Martin of Maine, expressing my unhappiness of him inciting Canadian politcans to commit treason. I copied the letter to several local politicos and to Maine newspapers.
What astounds me is that their media does not understand that Trump's rhetoric and an unhinged ICE gestapo police force is deterring Canadians to visit.
They just cannot connect the dots from Tramp's 51'st state rhetoric and Canadians not traveling south!
