Commenting on the last post about the AI Business Bubble, reader TB mentioned that what Mr. Orwell once envisaged about the year that 'Born In The USA' was released* is now just around the corner.
I, only half in jest, responded by saying that we might, ourselves, have already gone around said corner.
And then I read this, by Christian Hetzner writing in Fortune (web archive link):
George Orwell’s 1984 warned of a future where Big Brother watches every move. Today, modern technology is making that vision a reality, and Oracle founder Larry Ellison—the world’s second-richest person—sees a growing opportunity for his company to help authorities analyze real-time data from millions of surveillance cameras.
“Citizens will be on their best behavior, because we’re constantly recording and reporting everything that is going on,” Ellison said in an hour-long Q&A during Oracle’s Financial Analyst Meeting last week...
Upshot?
I no longer have any jests to give whatsoever.

We entered the world of 1984 decades ago but most were unaware.
With social media, everyone can see our politcal bent and other presences. Just with you blog, you know my likes, my dislikes, sports I played and issues I am interested in.
The more social media I comment on, the more one knows.
This is how politicians can now game elections, by taking the majority of likes and dislikes and craft your election pitch on the information. With unlimited money, the Goebbels Gambit is played, where a lie often repeated is deemed fact by the people.
In the USA, where literally hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on elections, selling fabricated issues to sell to the gullible electorate.
In Canada with stricter election spending has some control but unless we literally restrict election spending and offer equal TV/radio time to candidates, the MAGA style propaganda machine will soon take over Canadian politics.
Gar - send your comment again...It got disappeared because of my clumsy use of the moderation feature on this creaky ol' platform.

The one with the HTML link, or the "Douche Bank" comment?
Both! (it's a platform issue)
This evenings news reported on an american running for govenor of her state. Seems the opposition accessed her military files which included medical reports, social security numbers, etc. Then turned it loose. Its good to have rules but you also need people who will play by the rules. The U.S.A. is quickly implementing the same programs China has to keep an eye on all their citizens and what you do determines what schools you can go to, where you can travel, etc. Trump and his cohorts want to control the citizens of the U.S.A. for their own benefit. Once upon a time it was just as easy to access information but there was a greater chance of being caught.
I expect by years end the U.S.A. will be a very different country and not one which is friendly to Canada. It will most likely have very few people of colour, immigration will only be for certain countries and the government and corporations will ensure the Indigenous People have their land taken away.
When trump had his first go round families were placed in detention camps, children were seperated from their families, wonder if all the children were located and re united with their parents. This time round trump and his government are running concentration camps. Yet the majority of Americans just sit and watch t.v. They don't seem to understand at some point they will come for them also. What is going on in the U.S.A. ought to worry all of us but fascism seems to have been forgotten. In Germany and the countries they invaded people had their front doors kicked in and searched and messed up, men taken from the streets and their homes and placed in slave labour camps. Trump and his crew are acting as crazy as the Nazis.

Interestingly, some of that prop machine has made its way to this tiny platform, which is why I've had to turn on the comment moderation for only the second time.
The first time was occurred when I had the audacity to post data on the progress with the development of the COVID vaccines and then report on the efficacy data.

You asked:
"...(W)onder if all the children were located and re united with their parents...?"
Well...
From Human Rights Watch, reported late last year:
"As many as 1,360 children have never been reunited with their parents six years after the United States government forcibly separated them at the US border, and US efforts to help separated families have not adequately reckoned with the severe harm inflicted on them, Human Rights Watch, the Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP), and the Lowenstein International Human Rights Clinic at Yale Law School said in a report released today..."
.
A familiar trio are directly responsible for this. During Trump’s first term, he demoted the sitting director of ICE and installed Tom Homan, who had long advocated for the separation of children from their families as a deterrent. Stephen Miller was his senior adviser on the file. They were reeled in somewhat by the courts, but did a lot of damage that has never been (and cannot be) repaired. Now they’re back with a vengeance and are not only ignoring previous rulings, but coming up with new atrocities where cruelty seems to be the point.
It’s no longer just separation as they arrive, but separation of families that have been here for years. No due process, and the kids (US citizens) are suddenly left adrift, with no idea where their parents are or if they’re ever coming back. ICE says it doesn’t keep stats on them.
American kids left stranded when ICE takes their parentsCNNhttps://www.cnn.com › 2025/09/23 › politics › us-citize..
“ Federal agents donned riot gear and lobbed flash bang grenades and smoke bombs at protesters as they raided a pair of cannabis farms near the California coast this summer. When the smoke cleared, multiple employees were left injured and a worker fleeing one of the facilities plummeted 30 feet from the roof of a greenhouse to his death.
The raids made headlines for the chaotic and deadly scene that unfolded, as well as reports that a protestor fired at ICE agents.
What went largely unnoticed was just how many US citizen children — more than a dozen, according to CNN’s analysis — were left without parents to care for them.”
And today Trump told an assemblage of corralled generals that they should be practicing for war by advancing on American cities and civilians. He floated his 51st state fever dream on the same group.
If the practice sessions work out in Chicago, who’s to say he won’t start looking at Toronto? Mr. Ford has said some mean things about him lately.
Thanks for that additional context regarding the actions of the current regime. Clearly, the cruelty is at least part of the point.
As for the personal actions of the good Mr. Homan there is this to consider as well.

Trump is acting as if he and his MAGA crowd have no intention to relinquish their hold of government in the next election or ever.
Unless the midterm elections prove otherwise, and I doubt, then the USA will become a full blown dictatorship.

RossK and Lew E., Thank you for the information.
What trump did in his first term is uinforgiveable. Separating children from their parents never to be able to be reconnected. Too bad its not something which could be dealt with by the Court of the Hague.
While children were being separated from their parents at the time, I did wonder how many were sold into the sex trade. It would be good if some organization could get the DNA of the parents so it could be kept on file and a search done for their children,
Come to think of it separating families from each other was something old Hitler did. Boy at the rate things are going, well hitler wasn't as fat as trump but that might be the only difference.
