Coultergate: A Tempest In A Crackpot?

On Monday, Ann Coulter got p*wned in an open forum at the University of Western Ontario when a young undergraduate named Fatima Al-Dhaher stood-up and asked a pointed, relevant and intelligent question that led the conservative comedian to descend into self-ridicule.

Then, the following night at the University of Ottawa Ms. Coulter's next Canuckistanian World Tour appearance was cancelled at the last minute.

Apparently the cancellation was caused by alleged security concerns that arose due to an even more alleged unruly mob.

Well, it turns out that there really was no 'security' concern or an 'unruly' mob.

And that is according to the police AND the university's administration.

Here is the official statement on the matter that was released Wednesday by the the U. of Ottawa:

OTTAWA, March 24, 2010On Tuesday, March 23, an appearance by Ann Coulter was scheduled on our campus, organized by the International Free Press Society Canada and the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute.

The University of Ottawa has always promoted and defended freedom of expression. For that reason, we did not at any time oppose Ann Coulter’s appearance. Whether it is Ann Coulter or any other speaker, diverse views have always been and continue to be welcome on our campus.

Last night, the organizers themselves decided at 7:50 p.m. to cancel the event and so informed the University’s Protection Services staff on site. At that time, a crowd of about one thousand people had peacefully gathered at Marion Hall.

“Freedom of expression is a core value that the University of Ottawa has always promoted,” said Allan Rock, President of the University. “We have a long history of hosting contentious and controversial speakers on our campus. Last night was no exception, as people gathered here to listen to and debate Ann Coulter’s opinions.

I encourage our students, faculty and other members of our community to maintain our University as an open forum for diverse opinions. Ours is a safe and democratic environment for the expression of views, and we will keep it that way.”

Please note that this is the University of Ottawa’s official statement and no further comments will be issued.

So there you have it.

Free speech and open discourse......

It would appear that conservative comedians named Coulter just aren't that into either of them.

Allegedly.

Update: La Femme K.O'M. has more....Including the tidbit that a CBC reporter overheard the Comedian's helpful handlers making a fuss in the hall a couple of hours BEFORE the crowd even began assembling in earnest.

There was a lengthy discussion about Comedienne Coulter's non performance in Ottawa on the CBC AM network this morning...I couldn't help but think it would have gained something from a short appearance by Kady...

Suffice to say, the point that you make so strongly here Ross - that there was no 'real' threat AND that the decision to cancel was made - very early on - by Coulter and her handlers.

I do wonder about the policies of Border Services Canada though...aren't those the same people who blocked George Galloway, delayed Amy Goodman and turned back a couple of young reporters from Chicago.

Sauce for the goose - I should have thought.

Still, now she's here - let her rant...she'll end up being her own worst enemy.

I would like to have a guest list for the performance at the Rideau Club though.

Won't be long before she asks somebody to take a long ride into the cold night on their dog sled.

(Goebbels + Yuk Yuks) x Marilyn Manson = Coulter

There might be a little Syd Vicious in there as well.

she is NOT a comedian ( or a comedianne for that matter either) Comedians are funny, she's just a hate-filled bag of venom.

GW--

I agree with letting her rant - as the rev paperboy stated very eloquently previously - the thing is, after London they clearly went into message control mode (see the Calgary missive above) to squelch any and all open discourse that would cause the comedian Coulter to descend into self-ridicule once more.

Regarding the list....one can only assume that there was some sort of 'organization' with tax exempt status that served as the beneficiary to 'partial' proceeds....ergo?

Beer!

You lost me with that one....

But your post on the matter was brilliant

Ian--

Goebbels and Manson, definitely.

But Sid?

Didn't he have better hair and a far superior sneer.

I will, concede however, that Glen Matlock was a better bass player than both of them....

Ha!

(just so you know, cherry blossom blizzards are breaking out everywhere in Lotusland this weekend)

Rev--

How about this then...Ms. Coulter is a "Conservative Crackpot Crusader" laughs at her audience (rather than the other way around)?
