This Day In Clarkland: You Can Take The Darth Out Of The Constable...

...But It's A Whole Lot Harder To Get Out The Whine.

And/or the heavy breathing of the Deputy Premier on affordability and housing, and all that.

Martin MacMahon of CKWX has the story:

Claiming there are some people who will never be happy on housing, the minister responsible is defending the province’s record on that file.

Stating there’s a lot of provincial work that goes unseen, such as 20,000 seniors receiving cheques to subsidize housing, Minister Rich Coleman says the work that is done by the province isn’t always recognized...

{snip}

...“I guess some people just have to get up and whine every day, I don’t know,” says Coleman...

I actually think I kinda/sorta get why Mr. Coleman might be legitimately upset by folks slagging his efforts on this file.

Why?

Because while Mr. Coleman's efforts here are only half-measures, at best, they do at least something real standing behind the photo-ops and the prop-a-gammon.

But, when you are part of a government that has been going full-bore photo-op since (at least) 2011...

Well.

How do you expect people to react to half-measures?

________
And, for those of us who have been paying attention...We also recall where affordable public housing has been lost in Lotusland...
And for those who pay attention to minutae (for the irony)...We also recall how a certain fine fellow who once championed a notion that became the fast-ferrified Ice Bomb bridge around our collective necks used to tell anyone that would listen that Mr. Coleman was going to turn the social housing landscape into Valhalla...

Good thought...

It's historical from back in the 'Dark Lord of GordCo' days I believe.

More precisely...

...Blame it on Tieleman.

The ice bomb bridge problem was corrected by corporate Christy corps. Their help in creating more global warming has created a warmer climate making the ice bombs a rarity. Nobody ever gives them their due credit.

Ha!

Hadn't thought that one through...

Guess the lack of ice also makes it easier for Sparkle Ponies for frolic in the guy-wires as well!

Coleman may complain, but the unaffordability of housing in Greater Vancouver is going to create more homelessness. His government has done nothing to improve things for the average working person. His government has ensured the foreign buyers can continue to buy up as much as they'd like.

Then there is the small problem of those on disability and welfare who have not had a raise in their housing allowance since June 2007. Try being a parent on welfare with kids and trying to find housing when even professionals and fully employed tradespeople can't afford Greater Vancouver housing.

A salary of $72k a year still leaves a person going into the hole by $2,700 a year in Vancouver, while it gets you $49K of disposable income in Edmonton.

One in five children live in poverty in this province. Can you just imagine what their homes much be like. Ya Coleman, people have the right to be pissed and those 20K cheques for seniors are a drop in the bucket.

All that affordable housing off of Main Street, Little Mountain, which was sold off, nice move by the idiot politicians. Can you imagine if it had been re-developed for those working in Vancouver and had been rented out as "mixed" income, i.e. 30% of the gross income.

With the B.C. Lieberal's housing strategy Vancouver will be a ghost town in 15 years. No one will be able to afford to live there and most companies will have moved out past Abbotsford or to Calgary.
