Helm, a native of Arkansas, has stated that he assisted in the research for the lyrics.^[3] In his 1993 book This Wheel's on Fire, Helm writes "Robbie and I worked on 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' up in Woodstock. I remember taking him to the library so he could research the history and geography of the era and make General Robert E. Lee come out with all due respect."

Helm refused to play the song after 1976 even though he held concerts, which he called "Midnight Rambles", several times a month at his private residence in Woodstock, New York...

Laila Yule has a great piece up where she goes through AG John Doyle's report on legislative expenses in considerable detail. 

What she has to say pretty much shreds the last remnants of Speaker William Barisoff's original claim about how it is all just a matter of arguments over accounting methods (recall that Finance Minister Falcon did the same thing with the Puffmaster Flash a few days earlier regarding the budget deficit).

There is much to read and sift through over at Laila's. Here is just one bit that I found fascinating because it demonstrates that not only have things not changed in the move from Mr. Campbell to Ms. Clark, but that, at least in term of spending out of the Premier's office, they have actually gotten worse.

Under Christy Clark, the office of the premier has had more than a 100% increasefrom the dearly departed Campbell, who in 2010/2011… spent a mere $205,139.95 in his last (not even) year in the premiers office....

The escape hatch has 'suddenly' been opened for Christy Clark by none other than that old Fed Lib, Mr. David Anderson:

...Joining those speaking out (against the Northern Gateway Pipeline) was former federal environment minister David Anderson, who ripped into Enbridge as “perhaps the last company in North America” that should be permitted to construct an oil pipeline across the province.

He accused the Calgary-based company of having a “cowboy culture” that is indifferent to safety and “quite inappropriate for building a pipeline in one of the most sensitive parts of the world.”

Mr. Anderson referred to a litany of oil spills from Enbridge-operated pipelines, including a large rupture in Michigan that prompted U.S. regulators to brand the company’s initial response to the mishap as one akin to “the Keystone Kops.”

“Enbridge should simply withdraw its application and disappear,” said Mr. Anderson, who spent five years as minister of the environment in the Liberal government of Jean Chrétien. “There is nothing to indicate the company has changed its corporate culture of carelessness, with respect to worker safety and environmental protection.”

Mr. Anderson, a long-time opponent of oil tanker traffic through B.C. coastal waters, scorned Enbridge’s commitment to spend an extra $500-million to further lessen the project’s risk, including thicker pipe. “You don’t change a corporate culture by spending more on steel,” he said...

But here's the thing.

Who, we can only wonder, might have built that hatch?

How about we revisit Nancy MacDonald's breathy puff-piece in the wake of Mr. Clark's by-election win last spring:

...After university, Clark jumped into campaign battles, first for the B.C. Liberal Party, which was then rebounding under Gordon Wilson, then in ’93 for the federal party. In Ottawa, she joined her future husband Mark Marissen, who would later become a key organizer for Paul Martin and Stéphane Dion. On the Hill, they were seen as “young Turks,” friends say, growing their political skills and networks. Marissen was an executive assistant to revenue minister David Anderson, and Clark was transport minister Doug Young’s western desk. But in ’96, during Glen Clark’s NDP reign, Clark, then 30, came home to run (for Gordon NOT Wilson)...


So.

Now that Jelly Roll et al., have framed the thing so that Ms. Clark 'can't lose' given the chicken-hearted, long distance 'feistiness' factor (ie. if pipeline gets built she 'wins'!) and the heavy-hatch lifting by political surrogates, no matter how elderly (ie. if it's just too dangerous to build, she 'wins'!), is The Snook gonna be able to make like Charlie Sheen and rise-up, reborn, in the eyes of the media?

Well....

Thing is, so far the sucker-punched Lotuslandian punditry have not yet bitten*.

And if they don't bite by Thursday, I'd be willing to take pretty short odds to bet that you will suddenly see Ms. Clark dump this issue and move on to the next big thing.

Something way more pressing like, say, handing out rainbow-coloured oreo cookies just in time for the Three Weeks of Pride.

Or some such thing.

On Friday afternoon, like every resident of America, I was not watching the Olympic opening ceremony.

Instead, I was sat at home, quietly fuming at the fact that NBC, the US network which purchased rights to the entire Games, had come to the conclusion that it would be a good idea delay broadcast of this global news event until the evening prime-time, roughly nine hours after it had finished.


This being the era of Twitter, I did not have to suffer in silence. At around 2pm, I began posting a series of messages complaining about the company’s hugely-cynical policy. One of them suggested that frustrated viewers voice their complaints to Mr Gary Zenkel, the President of NBC Olympics.


“The man responsible for NBC pretending the Olympics haven't started yet is Gary Zenkel,” read the Tweet. “Tell him what u think!” It then contained Mr Zenkel’s work email address.


A few dozen people “re-Tweeted” the update over the ensuing hours. Several of them used the “hashtag” #NBCFail, which, thanks to the broadcaster’s comically inept coverage of the London games, has since been a trending topic on the microblogging site.


Later that afternoon, I was invited on the Los Angeles talk radio station KNX 1070 to discuss the absence of live coverage of the ceremony. If I remember correctly, I declared myself “utterly outraged” during that two-minute interview, saying with only a hint of understatement that NBC was: “treating the people of America with contempt.”.


Yesterday morning, I wrote a short article for The Independent about the growing criticism of NBC’s Olympics coverage, which has resulted in network TV viewers being shown almost no high profile events live, while commentators made a series of basic factual errors – among them, calling Luxembourg "a small, central European country.”


Shortly after filing that article, I attempted to check my Twitter account. When I logged on, I was presented with a message saying it had been “suspended.” If I had any questions, I was asked to click on a link and fill in an online form...

...This evening NBC Sports released a statement reading: "We filed a complaint with Twitter because a user tweeted the personal information of one of our executives."

Nevermind the fact that the Email address that Mr. Adams posted is a corporate one, not private, and is freely available to anyone who can use teh Google.

Christy's Whistle Stop 'N Whiskey-A-Go-Go Tour Touches Down...

...In The Land Of The Kossacks.

In other words, the evil leftist transit hub down south better known as The DailyKos thanks to a very strong piece on the Northern Gateway fiasco by a young fellow named BC Progressive:

...To be kind about it, the Premier is being foolish and has little understanding of the file.  Premier Clark and her BC Liberals have released five points of contention with Enbridge and the Alberta Government, which they claim must be addressed before British Columbia will endorse the pipeline project, which is currently estimated to be worth six billion dollars.

The demands are a nonsensical list of unconstitutional demands of another province, combined with environmental guarantees already required under the National Energy Board review that will potentially approve or deny the project.

These pointless demands have come during a meeting of the thirteen Premiers of Canada, and has led to tension at a meeting where the dominant theme was supposed to be health care and the creation of a truly national energy strategy.  Instead of being a committed voice in favour of sustainable economic development of our natural resources, Premier Clark has unilaterally removed British Columbia from the national energy plan meaning that any strategy involving the tar sands won't have the benefit of influence from British Columbia, which currently is one of the most environmentally friendly governments and provinces in the country...

...The reason for this posturing from BC Premier Clark is simple; politics.  The Premier and her party are trailing the BC New Democrats by more than twenty points in the polls, and the public is deeply opposed to the Enbridge line.  The BC Greens and NDP both oppose the pipeline without exception, and now the Liberals have decided that they'll oppose it, unless they can get the ransom they want.  The BC public isn't falling for such a transparent game.  

If the Liberals are opposed to the pipeline like they say, then they should simply oppose it instead of proving that they're willing to be bought off for some money.  Same if they support the pipeline, just support it instead of prostituting the province off.  Sadly, that isn't in the nature of the BC Liberals, who are eager to sell off everything of value in the province in order to fuel their ideology and personal greed and corruption...

Now, for the record here are Premier Talk Show's 'Big-Five' on the Gateway file that 'she' keeps on nattering on about in the Land of the Twitts:

• Successful completion of the environmental review process. In the case of Enbridge, that would mean a recommendation by the National Energy Board Joint Review Panel that the project proceed;

• World-leading marine oil spill response, prevention and recovery systems for B.C.'s coastline and ocean to manage and mitigate the risks and costs of heavy oil pipelines and shipments;

• World-leading practices for land oil spill prevention, response and recovery systems to manage and mitigate the risks and costs of heavy oil pipelines;

• Legal requirements regarding Aboriginal and treaty rights are addressed, and First Nations are provided with the opportunities, information and resources necessary to participate in and benefit from a heavy-oil project; and

• British Columbia receives a fair share of the fiscal and economic benefits of a proposed heavy oil project that reflects the level, degree and nature of the risk borne by the province, the environment and taxpayers.

With that set-up, I'll be back later with a post on the sucker punching of the Lotuslandian media from 5000 km away (aided and abetted, of course, by the laying of anaesthetizing leeches on their bruised and beaten faces)....

Just couldn't face writing it late on a lazy Sunday night after getting back from the beach with the guitar (the old one, no hole in pickguard, but close) and the Whackadoodle.

In the meantime, feel free to speculate in the comments on which local pundit will pick him or herself up off the canvas first and suddenly start spouting gibberish about how the Ms. Clark has finally turned things around because of her 'feistiness' (1..2..3..4) and her newfound ability to 'stand-up' for B.C.

Rumour has it, most of the smart money is on the guy that keeps trying to eat Chichester Cathedral*.

You, Dear Reader  (especially if you have a hangover as you are reading this), probably think I'm joking, right?

Wrong.

At the races last night. The night crowd is something else. You would think they were drinking free beer or something.

I do not read the programme so I was surprised when the track announcer informed us one of the races was sponsored by Bralorne Gold Mines. Bralorne are a penny stock company redeveloping the once bountiful Bralorne properties up around Gold Bridge. At one time the stock traded for dollars and cents. Now it trades in cents.

What the f*ck were the motherf*ckers from Bralorne doing at the races? I reached for my phone and found out. At the end of May one Patrick Kinsella, noted horse owner and somewhat shadowy political fixer, was appointed to their board.

To invest or not to invest. That is the question. So far it does not look like the man behind our fishy Premier has helped attract many investors to the golden hook of what once was, and may again become for all I know, a splendid mine....



My advice to Beer....

"You Can Look But You'd Better Not Touch, Boy!"

(Unless, of course, somebody like, say, NVG digs up something about how defunct gold mines are now in line for massive provincial sluice gate remodelling subsidies that will make longterm personal services contracts with former public Railways look like peanuts...Or some such crazy, mixed-up thing)

A Very Relevant Column - The Dean Comes Through

Yesterday morning I took umbrage with the fact that the only political party that Vaughn Palmer audio name-blamed for the shameful, and longstanding, financial shenanigans at the British Columbia Legislature was the NDP.

That singularly narrowly-focussed name-blaming was levelled during one of those cynical quick hits on CKNW with Philip Till where the air is thick with 'way more-holier-than-thou-and-thou-and-thou' codswallop.

But in print, in his VSun column yesterday, Mr. Palmer was much more thorough and complete.

And he got to the heart of the matter.

To wit:

VICTORIA There must have been some bittersweet laughter across the provincial public sector Thursday afternoon, after the release of the auditor-general's report on the fiscal farce that passes for bookkeeping at the legislative assembly...

...The details are laid out in a 17-page report. Bank balances that bore no resemblance to bank statements. Invoices never reported. Accounts so out of whack that Doyle can't begin to certify them as correct. An assembly that doesn't file annual financial statements, rendering the audit trail some-what bereft.
These findings did not come as a bolt from the blue. The auditor-general first put the assembly on notice about serious deficiencies in accounting practices in 2007.


He was ignored. "The results of this audit would likely have been much more positive had the legislative assembly implemented the recommendations made in my office's 2007 report on the same topic," as he noted Thursday...

...More than a year ago, he (Doyle) sent a draft report to the Speaker's office with a longer list of concerns. Later in the year, two more preliminary reports.


Still there was no rush to square up the books. Twice I wrote about the holdup in this space. The coverup continued.


Finally, after all the stalling and secrecy, Doyle put out a media release this week advising that he would be delivering a finished copy of his findings to the Speaker's office on Tuesday morning. That did it...

...Blame? I fault Barisoff first and foremost. In a media conference call, he tried to suggest that the problem involved some sort of "personality conflict" between the auditor-general and the legislature's in-house comptroller...

...Barisoff has known about these concerns for a long time. Whether through bad advice or the imperiousness that sometimes infects the world-apart atmosphere of the legislature, he failed to act decisively to settle them.


I'd also blame the legislative assembly management committee (LAMC), an all-party committee chaired by Barisoff which is supposed to oversee the affairs of the assembly. It rarely meets, and then only in secret, and its decisions are not always made public. Several years ago the committee delegated Barisoff and the then clerk of the legislature, George MacMinn, (who has since retired) to address Doyle's concerns. But I'm told there is no minute to that effect.


John Horgan, an LAMC member in his capacity as house leader for the New Democrats, took his share of the blame for the laxity. He also disclosed that the committee has only been called into session a couple of times since he was appointed a year ago and he wasn't shown a full copy of Doyle's report, draft or otherwise, until Tuesday.


Horgan praised the new clerk of the legislature, Craig James, for getting the ball rolling on addressing Doyle's concerns. But he agreed with the auditor-general that a lot more needs to be done. And soon...

Look.

I know that Mr. Palmer is very likely the hardest working proMedia person in Victoria*.

And I know that he likes to take the long view of things.

I just think that, sometimes (and sometimes often), that 'historical' long view keeps him from writing harder.

That was not the case yesterday (even with the historical background included).

I apologize for excerpting so much much of Mr. Palmer's column (usually I just use lede's or short snippets to try and facilitate click throughs), but after slagging him for his brief audio passage with Mr. Till yesterday I felt it important to demonstrate the full weight of his fair share blamefest in print....I did leave out the stuff at the end of the column, which actually may be most important thing of all down the road...That part was a discussion of whether or not Mr. Doyle will be reappointed as AudGen...The Dean wants him.... The Dipper Mr. Horgan says he wants him....But....The appointment committee?....Well, just like the longstandingly lame LAMC, it contains a majority of LINOs....Sounds like a potential election wedge issue to me if Mr. Doyle is not sitting once again in the AG's chair come next spring...
*Assuming that Mr. Holman is now relaxing and reclining in the luxurious world of academia...Ha!
Oh....And thanks to the Anon-O-Mouse who set me straight about Mr. Palmer's column in the comments to yesterday's post...I actually didn't read it until this morning for a couple of reasons...Firstly, had a couple of pseudo-academic deadlines yesterday (what, I work in the summer??!!)...Secondly, when I went to buy my pile of pre-weekend Friday night dead-tree papers I just couldn't bring myself to pick-up the VSun given it's egregious holier-than-even-P. Diddlyesque cover...

This morning Vaughn Palmer was on Philip Till's radio show talking about, as they described it, the farcical (Palmer) and the disgraceful (Till) goings on in the Legislative Budget Committee.

Here is what they did not describe:

....That the BC Liberal Party is in control of the committee and, presumably, has held that control for the last eleven years.


....Who the Chair of the committee is.


....Why the committee, which is controlled by the BC Liberal Party, would not, or could not, release the relevant account details that the Auditor General asked for.


...Who is responsible for compiling those account details and who hired them.

But.

Here is what Mr. Palmer and Mr Till did do.

They did 'blame' the NDP.

And they did so explicitly (i.e. it was not inferred).

Why?

Well, because, as they noted, the NDP does have two members on the committee.

Which is the minority.

Which means that, according to Mr. Palmer, "they could have done more".

Geez.

Maybe Christy Clark was right at that barbeque a couple of weeks ago.

But for all the wrong reasons.

Look....I am not saying that any and all committee members should not be held to account here, particularly if they were privvy to the apparent 'shenanigans'....But I am saying here that to go immediately, first, and only after two minority members of a longstanding committee is bizarre (and farcical and disgraceful?) in the extreme....

Hokey Pokey In Honduras Update....They're Almost Halfway There!

As we mentioned a couple of days ago, former Lotuslandian journos of the World, Jody Paterson and Paul Willcocks, are down in Honduras doing good works with Cuso International.

And on the side (and entirely on their own) they are raising money to truly make things better for a bunch of orphan kids in Angelitos Felices.

The online campaign started just a few days ago and they've already raised almost half  (OK, 45.56% to be more precise) of what they need.
