Charlie Angus, above, in a not surprisingly empty House of Commons, pointing out how and why quislings do not stand up for Canada.

Mr Angus is bang on. I cannot believe how many, Pollievre included, defend Trump. What the heck has happened?
I accepted Jagmeet Singh’s election as leader of our federal NDP, even though I voted for Charlie Angus who, with only half the votes Jagmeet got, was runner-up, nonetheless, in the first-ballot decision.
That’s what you do in a party that has the word “Democratic” in its name. Having lived in BC for over 40 years at the time, I’m used to the party making compromises between socialist justice warfare and perennial, also-ran, conscience-of-the-nation stuff that I sometimes don’t understand (and often disapprove of, like Mulcair’s thankless ouster). I knew Mr Singh and his brother had been in municipal and provincial politics in Ontario (where I’m from), representing fast-growing constituencies which have substantial numbers of Canadians of South Asian descent. Still, I was a bit surprised at Jagmeet’s win: I’d never heard of him before because he wasn’t yet a Member of Parliament in Ottawa—but I respect my fellow travellers’ democratic decisions.
I liked how he talked, realized he could attract more Sikhs into our party (Canada is home to one of the largest Sikh diasporas in the world, especially in BC and Ontario—although Jagmeet had to run in Burnaby, not a particularly Sikh riding like Brampton, Ontario or Surrey, BC), and that he was fresh and refreshing.
(I probably ignore Ontario politics because I used to haul batteries for my CBC cameraman dad when I was a boy on summer “holidays” and spent many a stultifyingly boring hour hanging around Queens Park, sitting in the gallery—before TV cameras in parliament, when MPPs used to thump their lecterns instead of clapping like they do now on TV—or killing time wandering the halls of power (I had lunch with Premier Bill Davis in the cafeteria once—nice fella) waiting to chase down some MPP trying to elude us, all for a 20-second clip on the evening news. Like, I think the experience might have caused lasting damage…)
I don’t especially disapprove of Jagmeet, but I’m reminded here that sometimes I sure wish Charlie had won the leadership. He always cuts to the chase with stiffening truths. He’s announced he won’t run again—too bad but such a hard worker really deserves a rest. I never thought he had a problem with Jagmeet. A team player all the way.
Jagmeet led the NDP for two elections (in 2019 the party won 24 seats for a loss of 15; and 2021 won 25 seats for a gain of one), tepid results only forgiven because the NDP held the balance-of-power in back-to-back Liberal minorities. His leadership will surely be reviewed if the NDP doesn’t significantly increase its seat-count—or win the balance of power again (how likely is that in a CPC minority?) in the next contest—whenever that is. I’m flummoxed as to why Jagmeet said yesterday that JT should resign—this after the NDP tore up the supply and confidence agreement with he Liberals months ago, and after he hinted at voting non-confidence (a repeatedly hollow threat) sometime in the spring (woo! JT must be shakin’!) Trudeau could just as well be writing Jagmeet’s script. Again, I’m reminded of Charlie and wondering—mootly—what he would have done if he were leader today.

I'll be sad to see Charlie go.
He is one of the last real NDP politicians. All we seem to have "left", are wokish Liberal lite dweebs. It's time get back to caring about the poor and downtrodden, labour, and socialist values.
Good old TC would be wondering, WTF happened!
Personally, I'm a socialist and damn proud of it!
Note : I used to consider myself a Democratic Socialist but around 40 years ago I realized that democracy doesn't work because the general population are dumb as fuck!
Thanks Scotty--
And sorry for that 'lasting' damage chasing pols around as a boy...
Just finishing up Charlie's latest book and I have a feeling that, like he did before he entered politics, he very likely has other things he wants to do before he gets too old to do them.
Hey!
Can you send me an Email at pacificgazette@yahoo dot ca when you get a chance? I have a message for you from another Dipper I have a feeling you really respect.
Chuck--
I think a major issue, as Charlie makes clear in his screed, is the rise of the 'Quisling'.

JP--
I know your tongue was firmly in your cheek when you typed that last sentence but, as one old guy speaking to another, I refuse to honestly believe that is the case.
After all, we've done the right thing(s) collectively before. So, I reckon we can do them again.
.
Thanks Grant--
However, I am with Driftglass and the Cornfield Resistance brigade when it comes never Trumper Mr. Steve Schmidt.
Specifically, I am of the opinion that Mr. Schmidt is a member of that most problematic quisling class mentioned by Charlie Angus in his rant.
And now, more than ever, it is important to give the quislings no quarter.
Especially those who are pretending to be on the side of the progressives for purely expedient political purposes.

Quislings to the right of us; Quislings to the left of us; Quislings in front of us; into the valley of the 2025 federal election charged the Canadian voter.
We all should be reading Orwell as 1984 has come 40 years later. The truth is trashed and lies, fake news, and complete fabrications are now the order of the day.
Our children don't have a chance as they are being brainwashed continually by the corporations pushing their own brand of snake oil.
As the USA teeters on the brink of totalitarianism, with the Mango Mussolini, playing the part of the Fearless Leader, our local brand of Quislings are busily readying their take over of Canada.
I hope you are correct, Ross.
There are some very good people out there, but few have a clue who there are voting for or why. They don't pay attention until a few weeks before an election.
Everyone I deal with in life know that I follow politics and I'm often asked who to vote for. Many don't even know if the election is provincial or federal.
I used to try to enlighten them. After seeing glazed over eyes after about 5 minutes, I would just tell them not to bother.
I could go on and on, but why bother!
I do appreciate your optimism and hope you are right but I'm not seeing a lot to be positive about.

No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!

Who are these "many Canadians"?
Alberta....Old Stock Canadians.....Conservative party of Canada...Canada's Joe Rogan bros....Who the fuck are they?
Who indeed. I would say, these Canadians who want to become an American state, give them a choice, either be charged for treason or move south of the 49th.
No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year?
I'm sure Christina Freeland could beat down the Trump administration as she has done before, hence Trumps dislike of her.
Question is , can PP ?
TB
I see Mr Angus has a message video to Donald Trump.
Thank-you evil eye for saying what I hope most Canadians are thinking.I am waiting for the leaders of our country to say the same. And tell the Orange felon to back off with the”jokes” about are country become the 51 st. State
If we had a smart politician, which in Canada are very few and far between, he/she should remind Trump that the last time the USA invaded Canada, things did not go well and that the White House was burned to the ground.
JP (upthread)--
You've got me there, for sure...
Maybe it's time for us to really focus on the drivers of public dumbness.
Now you've gone and done it...I think I feel a post or seven coming on!
Perhaps what we need is some kind of ultra-realistic virtual reality game-ified public service-type thingy in which Canuckistanians who are flirting with a fifty-firsting could see what it's really like to go through, say, a healthcare cost-driven bankruptcy.

What’s the Orange-Goo-Tan mean? I’ve heard guesses that it’s actually the balance of trade between the largest bilateral traders in history. Yes, China and, now, China by way of Mexico do more US trade but it’s less bilateral than Canada’s—and almost unilateral in China’s case. The US —and any country that trades with any other, has a balance of trade with every country it trades with. So Donald F Trump is probably referring to the US trade deficit with Canada. Never subtle, The Donald goes targets the top—which is us.
And par for his course—which many call “transactional” and I call 100% tactical and 0 % strategical: tRump moves from one “transaction” to the next as if the previous one is done like a “real estate deal” (I think Bob Woodward characterized it like that), without much, if any contiguity or continuity between any of them. To him the tariff threats are a done deal: he made the threats and his supporters elected him—and he’s not likely to renegotiate—or, at least, won’t like it when he has to. Trade between our two nations is continuous (in addition to heavy and vital for both): it’s transactional writ large, for sure, but ever and always the antithesis of deal-by-deal border-brokerage—and of course absolutely nothing like a one-off real estate deal—it’s essence being wholly strategic in nature, something tRump organically just doesn’t get.
With a reputation of stiffing his hires, leaving investors with his bankruptcies, and protection-extortion of allies (Ukraine, subject of his first impeachment), almost all of which he has gotten away with (his judgement of impeachment is incapable of taking US reputation or legacy into account: he won, it’s done), it’s no surprise the trade deficit with Canada he perceives as a debt the US owes rather than the ebb and flow of balance, variously surplus or deficit and never exacted at any particular time. To him, if the US “owes”, his first duty, as per his own, private modus, is to pay less—or, if he smells sweat, not pay at all. Then, inevitably, he turns any attempt at haggling into a debt WE owe the US, just like mob-muscle he admires so much. Other examples: making Mexico “pay for [a US] wall” and, yesterday (?) sounding out Panama which he says is “ripping us off.” So too the EU: ‘buy more US oil or tariffs it is!’ This is on brand.
Americans will bear the brunt of babysitting this brat for another 4 years, but he’ll throw a lot of tantrums and toys out of his crib all the while, screaming for attention, no doubt. Some of the ejecta will unavoidably land on Canadian soil—and we’ll be kept up nights by the colic next door. But I think there’s less to worry about than he threatens: the interests he threatens will disturb much bigger powers than him, namely THE DEEP STATELESS-CORPORATOCRACY
good line
why PP defends trump? Easy, because that is who he want to be when he grows up. If PP becomes P.M. Canada's position regarding Trump and Musk, will be them first, Canadian second.
Let us not forget PP was part of Harper's little gang of "misfits". Harper passed nine pieces of legislation which he was advised contravened the Canadian Constituion. All of them were appealed and won. So do we really want PP as P.M. if he has already demonstrated he ignores the Constitution?
When Harper and PP came to office, one of the first things they did was defunded all federally funded women's groups. How long does any one think womens/minority rights will be respected this time round.
When Veterans objected to the manner they were treated if they objected to the lack of support after fighting for Canada, politicians and senior staffers accessed their medical files to see if there was anything to be used against them. Those were confidental documents. How do people think PP will handle other confidental documents?
People complain about Trudeau, but if he goes, we most likely will have PP as P.M Give that a think. It is doubtful he will put Canada's interests first. When Trump starts talking about how our medical system is a subsidy to business, expect it to go. If Trump wants B.C. water, don't expect PP to say no to trump. If one of trump's financial supporters wants to open a mine in Canada, expect it to happen.
If you don't like Trudeau, how would you like christy Clark as the leader of the federal Liberals., Several times I've read she is planning on running, is taking french lessons and she has been conducting her rehab tour being on various news panels giving her opinion.
There are a lot of things which I do not like about Trudeau and what he has done. Then I look at the alternatives.
