From two student writers, William Mao and Veronica Paulus at The Harvard Crimson, dateline yesterday:
Harvard President Alan M. Garber ’76 has told faculty that a deal with the Trump administration is not imminent and denied that the University is considering a $500 million settlement, according to three faculty members familiar with the matter. The University is seriously considering resolving its dispute with the White House through the courts rather than a negotiated settlement, Garber said, according to the three faculty members...
Hmmmm...
University policy being 'leaked' by insiders.
Now, why would that kind of thing be going on?
Well...
...(Harvard President) Garber, in a conversation with one faculty member, said that the suggestion that Harvard was open to paying $500 million is “false” and claimed that the figure was apparently leaked to the press by White House officials...
Sheesh.
______
Of course, if an institution with the resources and endowment of Harvard caves, that's pretty much it for an independent academy in Mr. Trump's America...

As with most of Trump's "deals," it's never clear what the terms of the agreement are. In this case, is it potentially $500m to the "Trump administration" or to Trump's personal account? Or is that a distinction even worth making anymore?
Last I heard, Harvard was moving all their international students up to U of T to finish their degrees. I somehow doubt they're going to roll over for the MAGAts
Wag the Epstein
The Trumpian shakedown continues. Universities that have given in for this shakedown have lost all credibility.
As horrible as this all is it’s not just that easy for these universities to not go along. Much of their funding etc depends on the feds.

Thanks Graham--
The piece by Crawford Killam in The Tyee that you point to is a good one, particularly with respect to the ramifications of the capitulation by Columbia. However, I'm fussing about Harvard is because it is one of the few (perhaps only?) US'ian post-secondary research-intensive institution that has the resources to pushback over the longterm.

GarFish--
Unless I've missed something, so far that is only for int'l grad students from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, which is only a small fraction of the total.

I hear you Ross. I admit I don’t fully understand all of the ramifications, both short and long term, to these institutions. Yes, some have more money and other sources of funding to keep them going but obviously the drumph actions have been designed for maximum impact. Maybe these universities are hoping to weather the storm and just get to the end of this moron’s term in one piece.
Maybe they will pool their resources and take the fight to the courts. Maybe a very, very rich person will come and offer to fund the legal battle.
However it goes I am still hoping for that ACME anvil from the sky to come and solve these things. Meep meep!
Thanks Graham--
Of course there are no real anvils coming, nor should there be.
However, legal resistance both can and should/must continue.
On your point about funding the legal battle, I reckon the boards of the 'elite' US'ian schools, including Harvard, are actually most concerned about the proportion of super-finest-of-the-fine rich folks that will walk if they continue to resist (i.e. see Andreesen, Mark).

From what I have read and heard, part of this shakedown is to offer government sanctioned courses only. you know, the gospel according to Trump, who is a really smart person, really, really.
Imagine universities, offering courses of the fake 2020 election or that slaves chose to be in North America.
By Anvil I mean Karma, with the capital K. An anvil that is not of human construct or control but just… is. An anvil that will remove a problem one thought was immovable or inescapable but because of Karmic intervention is now reduced to a small or nonexistent size and rendered harmless or gone.
Graham--
Karmanvil and not a chameleon for sure!
.
EE--
That curricular codswallop, and much, much more, is even being forced on community colleges that have absolutely no ability to push back.

I'm sure Harvard can afford to fight this mess but they don't want to spend the money or get involved. If they fight Trump I'm sure they're concerned not about academic freedom but rather their positions in the world and their own bank accounts. For such a group of scholars they sure are stupid. Trump isn't smart enough to plan all of this but Miller is. The tactics are very familiar. Send these boys a few history books on Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Putin. The U.S.A. is already a fascist state. Part of those plans have to include an attack on major universities, hospitals, researchers and an ethnic group. Trump carrying or Miller carrying on about anti semitic activities at universities is simply not to anger Jewish voters or perhaps even Benni. Trust me if Trump and his will get around to the Jews. They just started with people of Central and South American descent. They will get around to the other groups when they are finished with the first group. This is all about making American white again and people who aren't, well they need to learn their place. These racists haven't gotten over loosing the Civil War. If Americans really wanted this to end it would. I remember a line from when I was much younger, "when fascism comes tot he U..S.A. it will be wrapped in the flag". don't know who said it but they sure were right.
