In these, the dog days of baseball and academic summer, getting in to the lab early is not a priority.
And besides, in the absence of the cross town east-to-west public school stampede, it is relatively safe to ride during the reckless 'minivans-in-a-hurry' morning time that takes place every weekday between September and June.
But nevermind all that for the moment.
Because it sure was nice to don the raincoat and put on the waterproof booties for a ride in the rain this morning.
Of course, by the weekend temperatures are supposed to approach 30°C in Lotusland once again, but for a couple of days at least it sure was good to feel like the world was not on fire.

In the twelve years I've been riding to UBC, I've been struck twice by soccer moms in minivans. (not that I've got anything against soccer, but I'd prefer Ted Lasso over Bend it Like Beckham!)
Yesterday and today's heavy rain in the Fraser Valley will make the corn and berries you buy that much sweeter and juicier than usual.

How right you are with the route choice! I do now change my route depending on the time of year. My route does have several private schools, and they seem to be the worst. Probably my worst accident was a woman who failed to look before left turning across a raised and separated bike lane that I happened to be using at the time. I struck the right front side of the car with the disc brakes locked. I did the alley-oop over the hood but the license plate on the front of her vehicle slashed my left shin open. I was OK but for that, and the front wheel of my bike was tacoed. Given that there was plenty of witnesses (right by the Synagogue at 28th and Oak) they called Police, Fire, and Ambulance right away. ICBC kissed it better, the settlement was enough to replace all the windows in my house, and buy a really nice set of carbon wheels for my triathlon bike (a symbolic gesture that I couldn't resist making). I don't want to jinx you, but I am glad to hear that you have avoided misadventure by bike for 25 years, most other people I know who cycle commute have had at least one run-in with a car.
Yikes - I know that corner very well and avoid it like the plague during school hours...Those folks even bomb up and down 26th at that time rushing to get there before the buzzer goes and wherever they're going next....Things are just as bad around 16th and Crown in the Jules Quesnel/LordByng axis of boweevils and European SUV's (and that one I really know because I used to be one of the harried parents dropping off kids around there).

Riding on the Inland Island Hwy Ross on the paved shoulder which has gravel almost all the way off to the side. Wind and traffic blows the fine grit on the paved shoulder, not a problem when it’s dry but when there is enough water to spray off the tires, the water fine grit mix gets everywhere.
Can’t remember now but at the time if Neil was on the telly wouldn’t have missed that one.
In my neck o’ the woods on the mid Island since the new laws came in, generally the drivers have been giving more space to bikies, but I take your point getting kids to school on time whilst simultaneously “ yellin’ at the kids in the back ‘cause their bangin’ like a Charlie Watts ” I’ve yet to try the new laws out on weekends when garage sales are happening where drivers are singularly focused.

Well, we had covid wasted years....All our elections, B.C. and Canada were set in stone, meaning no change.
Trump is/was a threat....I need to write my thoughts.
If the US fell to insanity we here in Canada would be at great risk, and easily toppled by US firepower..
Also....My political instincts can spot a sure bet winner everytime...Like young Trudeau's initial rise....I called that election over 6 months before E day.....
This Kamala Harris rise in amazing...Trump is done, ..so many states in play for Dems..
The Villages community in Magaville Florida held a 500 golf-cart Harris rally(in magaville)...Florida might be in play....Her momentum is bringing Ohio, N Carolina, into play....All Harris needs to win is hold onto the Blue Wall of Pennsylvania/Wisconsin/Michigan and she wins enough electoral votes to make her president...
Now add in Georgia..Arizona/Nevada/N Carolina..maybe Florida....
This is gonna be a landslide to end MagaWhiteNational rise for decades to come...Cuz, if old white retirees in the Village's community in magaville Florida are rallying for Harris, think what is happening in Normalsville, happening everywhere....This is gonna be a statement election to America's rightwing zealots..Either the right moves forward or they'll be left behind....

Forgot how young Lightfoot was, when he was young, but then so were my friends. From Toronto in the music business, in N.Y. with Dylan and his manager. Then later........well thankfully we had records and we can still listen to Lightfoot today. His voice was always so clear. Lightfoot defined a time and place in Canadian history which will be with us for a long time, even though most from that era are now dead. As my friend said, "all my friends are dead now", well except 3 of us. To have lived through all of that from the beginning of the movie industry in B.C., the Cave, Isey's, coffee houses in Toronto.
Life was very good for us, baby boomers.
Not only did we get to see people like Lightfoot and Ian and Sylvia but some of the greatest opera singers in history. when I looked at the list I realized I had seen many of them live, at their prime, well except the greatest soprano of them all Maria Calas. Fortunately there are recordings and recordings of some who were recorded at the beginning of recording.
Recording of music has been one of the greatest gifts inventors ever gave us. Not only did I hear recordings of the Stones, but saw them the second time they were in Vancouver.
Now do please be careful on those bikes. Reading blogs is one of the things I really enjoy and if one of you were to exit stage left, I would be sorely upset. Enough bloggers have left us, but they sure as hell provided us with interesting history as it was being made, without bloggers don't think we would have known as much as we did about B.C. Rail, etc. As one commentor recently wrote, the land B.C. Rail sits on, the value today.......and el gordo leased it out for a thousand years.
as the late sibling used to say, I'm glad I lived when I did. We got to see the world when it still was at its best. The next generations won't get that. Think of it every time those big fires start. As my fridge magnet says, "I maybe old but I got to see all the great bands". That's good enough for me, O.K. and the medical advances which kept us alive to get to this stage.
