"I don’t want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub..."
And, with the final passage of a certain omnibus bill of a very large size in congress today, Mr. Norquist has gotten his wish.
Except for one twisted sister that has separated itself from the writhing, gasping mass that has magically grown gills and vanished down the drain into the sewer where it is mutating as you read this so that it can grow exponentially before it bursts through the grates, masked, to terrorize increasing numbers and segments of the non-citizenry and citizenry alike:

...The Senate’s version of the bill steers an astonishing $130 billion into immigration enforcement, detention, and border security, according to the American Immigration Council’s tally, which includes funding for Trump’s border wall. In the buildup to passage in the Senate, this funding became the central MAGA sales pitch. “Everything else” — including the bill’s staggering cuts to the social safety net — “is immaterial compared to the ICE money and immigration enforcement provisions,” Vice President J.D. Vance posted on X Monday night, Vance’s post preceded, by hours, his casting the tie-breaking vote in the Senate...
Oh boy.

I leave for the home of the brave next week. "Oh boy" doesn't quite capture the thought of being confronted by beefed up and militarized border security.
I grew up in a border town where we went drinking on the cheap in the US every week. A wave of a driver's license was met with a friendly "have one for me" from the border agents. Those days disappeared for good in September 2001 despite all the help we gave stranded American travellers. It's been all downhill since.
There's actually no alligators at Alligator Alcatraz, they all appear to be living in the sewers of Washington DC.
There is more. Most of the American detention centres/jails and alike are operated by private contractors. Part of the ICE push to "disappear" people into these Concentration camps, is to increase the jailed population, making huge profits for those running the Camps.
We are now seeing ICE being Trump's Gestapo or Friecorps, a private army to do his bidding.
This is the sort of monster that Coward Carney has to deal with; this is the big story that the American owned Canadian media will not report on.

Good point - How about Oh Freaking! Boy.
We're heading down at the end of the month also. We hemmed and hawed about it but this is a long planned trip to see our very good friends who have been surrogate US'ian parents since the days when we lived down there in the age of Clinton. Long story short, we've decided that the insane clown posse is not going to keep us from seeing people we love dearly who are now in their 80's.
I, too, remember the days of the waving of the driver's license. We used to do it crossing at Sumas on the way for a weekend's skiing at Mt Baker when we were kids.
If only they were only located there GF. Case in point, it appears that the sewers beneath certain Silicon Valley quarters are filled to bursting with most ferocious of said reptiles. Too bad HST and Steadman aren't around to chronicle (and illustrate) them now.

There is, indeed, big money to be made in the privatization and expansion of the prison industrial complex as was so brilliantly satirized by A. Iannuci's gang in Veep.

Trump stood in the newly (and quickly) constructed Florida concentration camp with DeSantis and Noem on Tuesday and announced that his cabal (with DeSantis’ involvement) is working on allowing certain favoured immigrants to remain in the country. "The farmers know them. It’s called ‘farmer responsibility’ or ‘owner responsibility,’ but they're going to be largely responsible for these people, and they know these people.”
As many have been quick to say, this sounds a lot like making America great again by going back to the good old days of slavery. The farmers determine if you deserve to stay, and if they alone determine you don’t, then you get to stay in Mr. DeSantis’ new hotel. That should really result in wonderful working conditions.
The ICE goons have been going after the low-hanging fruit to date, and the resulting horror stories are truly disgusting. Now that they’ve received a $130Billion shot in the arm and a pat on the back from Congress and the White House for their despicable operations, we can expect an escalation of fearsome magnitude as they reach deeper into local communities. Noem and Holman will have to produce results, and that will be measured in body counts. First into privately owned prison camps to extract maximum dollars from the new kitty, and then out of the country when enough to captures have been realized to fill the vacancies. No due process required, as SCOTUS agrees. No doubt eager militias will be deputized to assist with the extra workload. What could possibly go wrong?
I used to believe the US citizenry would rise up against this sort of tyranny, but I’m no longer sure. They’ve relied on a system of checks and balances that has proven to mean financial checks and balances, not legislative. And a good portion of the benefits that will be stripped from swaths of the public won’t take effect until after the midterms, so full-court propaganda will be employed to make most believe that whether it’s deportation or benefit clawbacks, the government goons are coming for the other guy. There will be a lot of noise for sure, but little use of pitchforks, which are required now that it’s gone this far.
Anyone travelling to the excited states these days should be looking over both shoulders, and trying very hard not to look Latino.
I Theil your pain...
As that nice Yale Professor who moved to Canada said, the warning of Germany 1933 was "get out". She and her spouse and a friend, all PhDs teaching at Yale are now in Toronto teaching such things as fascism and what it is.
It doesn't take much to take current events and match them to pre WW II activities of the Nazis. Concentration camps, political enemies will be deported or jailed, marines and other military in American cities to deal with people who still think they have freedom of speech and eliminate opposition to the GOP. This morning's news reported on huge floods in Texas. If there is no FEMA how will the state recover? No workers to help with re construction of farms, roads, homes, etc.
I would not be surprised if some countries start to deal with the U.S.A. as it does with other countries considered not socially acceptable. If the U.S.A. reaches civil war levels, I do hope some one in Ottawa has a plan for the refugees who will be trying to enter Canada
There was an article up this morning from G.B. which details how the type of refugee is coming from France has changed. The police have also taken a new approach to the boats, which is slashing the boats before people get into them and they go to sea. Once they are at sea the article reported the police are prohibited in damaging the boats.
