Strange rumblings from the Albertalands, as noted byAlex Boyd of the Toronto Star:
As the debate over policing continues across North America, Alberta has tabled the idea of a “voluntary civilian corps.”
Todd Loewen, a backbencher MLA from a district northwest of Edmonton, introduced a motion this week asking the minister of justice to “explore options” for creating some sort of voluntary corps “to assist law enforcement in Alberta.”
Although it was a private member’s motion — this means it wasn’t an official government bill — the majority of MLAs present voted in favour, after a quick debate...
Gosh.
What could possibly go wrong?
________
In other Albertalands news, David Climenhaga reports that there is no evidence that Mr. Kenney's 3.5 million dollar inquiry into foreign funded anti-oil and gas industry campaigns has found any, you know, actual evidence....

Cormac McCarthy, where are you? We don't seem to be all that competent at sorting out who will make up a police force that serves the broader public, so the idea that someone's duly constituted militia might be any better looks patently absurd. This is making Alberta look increasingly as threateningly silly as Florida.

The fine UCP folks are pretty tight lipped about what this thing will actually be. The good Mr. Lawson says it will be used to deal with all that rural crime, crime that is actually decreasing.
Given that target location and demo, it would appear that, at the very least, this a high amplitude dog whistle to the base.

"Rural crime", that's just another term for now we can kill Indigenous people without repercussions. I'm sure a few chapters of the KKK will be established and all will be good. As the saying goes in Alberta, the closer you get to Red Deer, the redder they get.
The City of Edmonton and Alberta already have decent enough police forces. The suggested legislation, in my opinion will be aimed at permitting "whites" to kill "Indigenous" people, along with those who are opposed to pipelines and the oil industry. This will not turn out well if this goes forward. As it is, people are able to volunteer in rural areas as auxillary RMCP officers. Now if that is the case, why do they want some "civilian" force? How about no standards and lots of violence.
I can see these Militias as a method of driving some people from their land in rural areas, a method of having more guns in their homes. Lets hope the federal government steps in quickly or some one explains who many dead Indigenous people there will be in Alberta and how that might impact on Alberta. Trudeau Sr. declared the War measures Act. I can see the son doing the same if Albert's version of the "FLQ/kkk" comes into play in Alberta.
Raids on other people's ranches/farms are not the way to go
Wonder how this is going to be financed. thought Alberta was running out of money, the way they cut doctor's salaries by 20% and threatened to lay off nurses, about 600 as I recall. just wondering.
How about some better trained police with better oversight and enforcement aka internal affairs office?
The events surrounding the recent murder of two Métis hunters, Jacob Sansom and Maurice “Morris” Cardinal in Alberta demonstrate the accuracy of e.a.f.’s comment above.
“People are angry. They’re mad. They’re ready to step up and say, ‘They get in our way, they won’t be coming back.’ I’ll tell you what, I wouldn’t put it past them to say, ‘Shoot, shovel and shut up.’ ”
