The Shape Of Things To Come...

ABetterCityForWhom
ExactlyVille

The new mayor and council of Vancouver were sworn into office earlier today in, as long term city watcher Raymond Tomlin noted, "the luxuriously comfortable and city-owned Orpheum Theatre".

Mr. Tomlin also noted that, "Monday afternoon’s festivities (were) an ‘invite only’ affair".

Furthermore, according to the invite itself, the dress for the event was "business attire".

Hmmmm...

Comforting (for) the luxuriously comfortable, perhaps?

Thank you for the picture. I actually remember that time. As teenagers we would go Saturday afternoons to see an Elvis Presley movie and to lunch at Scotts
Always loved the Orpheum. First great staircase I walked up and down. Went to the benefit to fund raise to turn it into the home of the symphony. Jack Benny came as the main attraction. He was funny, and great. With the symphony and Benny playing violin, it was clear there wasn't a bad seat in the house when it came to sound. In the 70s went to see Paveroti there also.

Of course the theatre is comfortable. Business attire, might just be a way of signalling they are going to be a tad more formal that the previous group.

Invite only is a bit much, on the other hand it prevented protests at the event. It. O.K. for them to have one last good time before the work begins and they find out how fxxked up the city is and how much money it will cost to 'solve" the problem. It maybe too late to do much.

I do wish them good luck though. We all need it.

Great memories you've got there!

Point taken re: the invite thing...On the plus side, at least it wasn't mandatory yoga pants attire.

Dear e.a.f.

Where do you find the time to write on EmptyWheel, and here, and get away with not adhering to Rayne's new minimum 8 character sign-in? Oh, and I do enjoy your comments, here and there.

The great Brit band The Yardbirds wrote a fabulous blues-rock classic in the mid sixties titled Shapes Of Things based somewhat on Wells titular book. If I had any tech skills I woulda supplied a YouTube link. The song wonders and worries about the future which seemed fitting.

Ahhhhh....Got it Bruce - Thanks.

I was thinking of that crappy Mann-Weill 'Shape of Things To Come' tune that was done by a Monkees-like band for a movie that was then, inexplicably, covered about a million times by other bands.

NVG, yes its e.a.f. and those aren't the only two blogs, there are a number of others. How do I find the time? Its easy, no kids, no spousal units, no family, no interests outside of reading and a few friends. when I retired 22 years ago, there wasn't anything more interesting than politics which I've been reading since I was 8 years old--Majory Nicols, Sima Holt, Bruce Hutchingson?, Jack Wasserman when I was a kid, like in school.
My Mom was very politically astute and sometimes she would make comments or if I asked a question. When it came to the Holocaust, she said, "Don't forget, it can always happen again". Might have been about 12 or 13. I took note having heard the adults talk about what went on in europe during WW II. It is therefore important to me to read blogs and such to keep up with what is going on in the world, because as Mom said, it can always happen again. Like my Grandfather I'd like a way out and found one.

RossK, yes no yoga pants, which maybe a good thing. Wearing business attire maybe a way of signaling, we're not out for a walk in the park, we are going to take care of the park and conduct business in the best interests of the park and the people who live in the City of Vancouver and pay taxes for the park.

I can remember when the B.C. Electric building was built and became the tallest building in the City. If you worked for the company you could go to the top floor and ask to see out the window--Mom took us there and it was amazing to look out that window towards the water. Prior to that Hotel Vancouver was the tallest building.

The only other thing of interest to me is watching my friends and neighbours little kids, who are ever so entertaining as they learn to walk, ride their bikes or the teenagers as they start to explore.

even had a 5 year phase when I wrote letters to the editor in the town I was living in at the time and the Sun and Province.

Why Rayne "excuses" me, well just lucky. If it were Baz I'd suggest because I mentioned one of my five favorite female singers included a friend of his.
Of course both of them have dumped on me from great heights with deadly accurrance. I took note.
