What Would Alexei Have Done?

The anti-Putin Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, who already survived a poisoning, is dead.

Below is his wife Yulia speaking at the Munich Security Conference just hours after she learned the news:

Navalny gave his life so that Russians could partake in a meaningful election.
Compare this to Trudeau's failure to implement election reform!
Compare this to Canada's MP's that never turned down a pay hike whilst others struggled!
Navalny should be remembered as Gandhi was; someone who gave for the better good.

Not many around like that anymore?

There is no comparison between Russian elections and Canadian elections. Do not take this as an endorsement of the first past the post system.

I do endorse the remembrance of Navalny as a person striving for good. Where was the outrage when the Russian kangaroo court sent him to jail for a term that was guaranteed to keep him in the Russian penal system until he died?

@ Steve C; I am merely pointing out the shallowness of our elected officials compared to those that actually fight for a just world.
Even in the Ukraine corruption is wide spread as it is within our current Canadian Government with the Canadian Border Services scandal!
We turn a blind eye to the real issues of the day less it affect our winter holidays!

P.S
Let's face it; a Westjet strike or disruption gathers more interest than the plight of the Ukrainian /Russia war and those in Gaza!

Canadians put a lot of effort, bandwidth and screen time into the two Michaels! one of which turned out to be not so innocent!

Heads up our Arse; you bet!

Oh, I see Anon 5:56, do these same sights you researched but didn't name also call the Pandemic a hoax brought on the WTO which is trying to establish a One World Order as well? (Which is an anti-semetic dog whistle).

Perhaps the petty quarrels can stop. My impression is the post is meant to honour Navalny and discuss his legacy.
When the news announced Navalny was dead I wasn't shocked but was very saddened. I'm sure Putin thinks he has done something great, but really, PUtin is a coward. Every time he wants some one dead he has some one else do it for him. Putin has never had the "balls" to do anything himself. Plays hockey, his team always wins, same with other sports. Then there is Mr. Navalny, who stood up and spoke his mind and suffered the consequences but did not show fear. Putin el al, poisoned him in hopes he would die. what did Navalny do? SURVIVED and went back to Russia to continue his campaign to bring true democracy to Russian politics and rid the country of the thugs who run it. Navalny did this knowing Putin would once again try to remove him from the public view or kill him. Navalyn had a wife, a 23 yr. old daughter and a teenage son. How many of us would be willing to die for our cause, given having a family and life. Navalny had a smile on his face most of the time. I'm sure it pissed Putin off no end. When you see Navalny on film he always appears as if everything is fine. That takes a lot of bravery nad sometimes acting skills.

Looking at some of the pictures of Navalyn while speaking and in court, he smiles. I suspect Putin was very afraid of Navalny, even if he was in jail or out of the country. What Putin has not realized is Navalny will not disappear from the public's mind. His death will be a reminder to all what one person can do.

Navalny's murder has saddened me. It also gives me hope, that there are people in this world who will give their lives for their beliefs and country. Putin has murdered Navaly but Putin still needs to cheat at hockey to win, still is short, still not as smart as others in the room. Navalny was tall, brave, smart, and had a great smile.

My condolences to his family, friends, and the people he gave hope to.

Some times when you kill your enemy you are simply making them a bigger, more visible hero. Once you have killed them, there is nothing you can do to them. Their bravery lives on.

Don't believe in an after life. However, it would be fun to watch a discussion between Maginsky and Navalny, perhaps a play

Steve C and Trail B--

No worries from me - reasonable good faith disagreement is fine around here.

As for the trolling - normally I take that stuff down, but I appreciate Mr. P.'s stepping in (I was off the box yesterday)

Thanks, as always, for your perspective e.a.f.

I suspect that many inside and outside of Russia reacted to news of Navalny’s death with the thought, “Of course he’s dead”, and “Of course Putin engineered his demise”. His death at the hands of Putin was a foregone conclusion as soon as Navalny voluntarily returned to Russia to continue his opposition after the first failed attempt on his life. There are far too many precedents for anyone to believe otherwise.

It’s akin to watching someone suffer from the ravages of cancer for an extended period. When the end comes, it’s sad, but hardly a surprise. Because the grieving process started long before the death, the shock is not as great.

For that reason, along with the fact that Russia is at war and under sanction by most of the international community, and even laying flowers at a memorial for Navalny results in brutal arrest by Putin’s thugs, the spark that surely must eventually come to ignite the tinderbox that is Russia was not generated by his death.

Yet.

I’ll keep it simple and just say I second e.a.f.’s and Lew’s posts, couldn’t have said it better myself.

Navalny's death could/should in a round about way have consequence for Putin loving Trump!
I would have thought that the US Democrats would be all over the connection but as now, not a whisper.
As usual the Democrats are asleep at the wheel.
