This Day In Clarkland...Funding The Biographer's Publisher With Public Money.

_______

Sunday June 5th: Please see update, in red, below...As a result of the update, I've changed the title of this post and removed material from the original post that commented on information in the first run of a  Maclean's review of J. Tyabji's biography of C. Clark that was factually incorrect...I've also taken down all comments written before 5:00pm Sunday that refer to and/or comment on the same factually incorrect information.
_______

From the deeply buried lede (i.e. the last sentence) in Nancy Macdonald's Maclean's (original) piece on Ms. Judy Tyabji's biography of our fine premier:

...It can’t help author or subject that Tyabji received grants from the B.C. Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts to write this book...

****

Here comes the updateish stuff...

Ms Tyabji tells the world, via Marky Mark's Klout Klub (aka, The Twittmachine), that she, herself, received no (presumably grant) monies:

To which Maclean's has responded thusly:

Clarification, June 5: This review has been updated to clarify that it was publisher that received standard financial support from the Government of Canada (Canada Book Fund), the Canada Council for the Arts, the British Columbia Arts Council, and the Book Publishing Tax Credit.

So.

There you have it...The firewall between publisher and author have taken care of everything.

______
And, no, I don't have any problem whatsoever with Arts grants (to publishers or otherwise)...What I do have a problem with is using them to help fund abject shillophancy in the run-up to an election campaign, particularly when said 'phancy is authored by someone whose spouse is on the government payroll for 'phancy in another, more sparkly and ponyish corner of the realm.

Former MLA Tyabji is by no means the only MLA to have written a book, or two, Bill Barlee the best, Gold Trails and Ghost Towns.

@MacleansMag book review factually incorrect and defamatory. No money received by me at any time for @christyclarkbc book #bcpoli #cdnpoli
--------------------
Let's say Tyabji i has a case: where is the lawsuit and request for an apology? There is no upside to her protest, she just drew more attention to the Flip and Judi show.

Keep in mind that the Canada Council for the Arts and the Canada Book Fund were basically controlled by Harper and his micro-managing minions at the time.

In other words.... the book would never have been published without tax dollars.

Canada Arts Councils Public Lending Rights branch where Stephen Harper raised the bar as to who would get that money from .... A book published and distributed and purchased by the Libraries provides remuneration to the author(s), publisher, editor, illustrator. Because there is only ONE copy purchased there is only one royalty paid even though the book is borrowed and read by MANY. In steps the PLR branch to count out how many times the book is borrowed per year and via a formula doles out the royalty money to the above contributors.

Two years ago the Federal government stepped in and changed the criteria of how many books needed to be borrowed to create a royalty. I lost my $40. The books are still being borrowed in the same numbers but Harper wanted to keep the $40 to balance his budgets. The minimum amount to be paid out used to be $30.

The reason for the 'bonus': To encourage the authors, publishers, editors, illustrators to keep on producing Canadian products

Judi's remuneration from her publications which are sitting on the shelves of public libraries collecting dust wouldn't create a bonus under the old scheme. There is a GOD

BC Arts Council guidelines (from website)state what activity will the program not fund: "(Quote) Research and writing of works with minimal, critical or analytical content such as indices, bibliographies...." There you have it.

Guy--

Probably more accurate to suggest that the publisher wouldn't.

See the Judi, spin her way back into Christy's arms…the mental gymnastics are breathtaking, if not hilarious:

Vancouver Sun: “I took some time to ask myself why I was so angry with Christy Clark,” writes Tyabji in a disarming passage. “I realized I was jealous. Christy Clark was someone I had known since we were teenagers. We were about the same age, and somewhere deep down, I was angry that she was premier and I wasn’t.

“That little bit of honesty made me laugh because I knew all too well what she had to sacrifice to be premier, and I had deliberately left politics because I was not prepared to make those sacrifices. I mentally kicked myself in the backside and decided to get over my pettiness.”

The question is, why does this particular satellite (and mulleted, co-satellite), out of all of Christy's fabulous constellation of parasites have currency?

Is it to thwart Flip from any future resurrections? He has everything Christy possesses, superb communication skills and chutzpah. He may be a powerful force yet, in this Province that embraces the strange and improbable...and unlike Christy, he is no political savant…he has intellectual curiosity and intelligence. Methinks Clark is keeping her friends close and her enemies closer. Unfortunately, that costs us.

btw for those who haven't scanned the twitter images in the link I posted above, have a wee look…it isn't only Premiers and biographers who are cozy…stenographers in their sunset years have strange bedfellows too...

How will the two el gordos work together? this is going to be fun........Perhaps Judy can write a book for el gordo one, also. perhaps photo op queen will give el gordo a nice new job........

The only question that really needs answering at this point is as follows:
Would Tyabji's book have been published without the grants?

I think Judi (who I'm sure still reads the Pacific Gazette) will be happy to answer that simple question. If not, maybe someone at the Canada Council for the Arts or the BC Arts Council will do so. As to the Book Publishing Tax credit rules my strong suspicion is that the tax credit doesn't come into the picture unless the book gets published in the first place.

I'd also like to know how many actual copies of said book have been ordered by the BC Liberal Party.

I am eagerly awaiting Pam Martin`s biography as well.
Maybe Judy could write it?

@SH The BC Liberals are in constant fund raising mode, even looking for nickels and dimes from a timid 'author'. However, if 'Behind the Smile' had been based on an Unauthorized style of writing by the author, like that of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, with a 'Mark Felt' providing anonymous insider information on the shenanigans of the BC Liberals, then the Party would be in receipt of millions of dollars with one draw back though, Christy's popularity with voters would drop like a rock along with everyone else on her executive team.
