But...
For a short time last night the Liberals were stuck on 164 and the Dippers had seven.
Which, given that 172 is a majority, meant that for a moment there Lizzie May actually held the balance of power.
Imagine that!
_______
And, coming back to reality...While all the punditry can talk about is the Dipper collapse, even if the guy I voted for, Don Davies, was to lose his 0.7% lead in Vancouver Kingsway, the individual NDP survivors will very likely have more power now than they had in the last parliament given how the numbers are shaking out..

And, even more real, in real politck terms at least, is how much this Dipper 'collapse' demonstrates that the progressive vote can make rational decisions when the whackaloons are at the threshold backed with a lunatic's tariff goonery.
And, of course, most real, at least in schadenfreude terms, is what happened in 'NoMoreConvoysInOurBackyardVille' (a.,k.a. Carelton).
Map at the top of the post is from the TorStar election tracking site...I found that one much more reliable and faster to update than either the one at Elections Canada or at the CBC...

I am still surprised that twit Arron Gunn won in the North Island
It seems what transpired last night, is the best course for the country. A minority government (168 seats) and probably supported by the NDP (7 seats), will have the voting majority.
This will give time for Carney to prove himself.
As for the "Wee P" he completely misread the Trump influence on Canada until it was far too late.
I doubt the conservatives will learn anything and continue on their anti-science, anti woke (whatever that means), anti tax (how do you fund the bloody country?) shtick.
The NDP will also have to do some deep soul searching as they had the absolutely the wrong leader and their message was well what message?
If the NDP is to survive they must reinvent themselves for the 21st century and deal with today's problems.
As for the issues, they will remain and largely ignored until the next election.
The housing issue can only be solved by 1) population distribution or making attractive for businesses to locate outside current urban areas and 2) scalable social housing based on 2 to 3 story maisonette style housing instead of "dog kennel" condos in towers.
This of course will not happen and the hoary old issues will remain.
Suck it up folks because with Trump and the USA, the next four years are going to be hell.
Interesting results. Here in the Okanagan it looks like one Liberal elected Stephen Fuhr who had been elected previously. Best part for me was Pollievre losing his seat.
T'was, indeed, disconcerting...Have to wonder if it has something to do with suburbia rising in that riding.

Think it just might be the jolt the Dippers need without having been banished to wilderness entirely.
You don't see anything positive in the latest FedLib housing plan?
.
The election was as good as could be expected.
A minority government is always better. Wee PP lost his seat! The poor results for the NDP was also expected. The resignation of Singh is a big bonus!
Time for the NDP to rebuild as a proper Socialist party and dump the stupid, and meaningless NDP moniker.
It's time to get back to the grass roots of the party.
Chuck--
Ya - it looks like the demographic has really changed in Kelowna.
Regarding the PP, wonder which Albertalands MP will be sacrificed to make way.
.
Pollievre should not be allowed to rerun. He lost fairly.
Well...If we played by fair and square rules there would be a whole lot of super finey fine-type folks selling popcorn at that arena named after a bank located in the centre of the universe instead of gobbling and guzzling from the big money suite troughs, on our corporate tax write-off dime of course, at tonight's Leafs/Senators game.
.
JP--
I agree about the bonus and rebuild but I'm not so sure about the name change...Do you have a suggestion for the latter?
.
Great result......Singh resigning(and I like him n his policies, he just couldn't grow the party)
Pierre Poilivre losing his seat....and the Bloc leader weakened badly....Carney has won 169 seats...3 short of a majority....He can work with the Bloc, or the NDP....And Elizabeth May's one seat.....Carney's in a powerful position(ignore our Big Canadian media's rightwing bent)
And as for the Insane Trump...get a load of his latest twisted logic..from today.

President Donald Trump told ABC News’ Terry Moran that China “deserves” the historically high 145% tariff rate he recently levied on goods from that country.
In an excerpt released early from a larger interview slated to run this evening, Trump also suggested China may absorb cost increases from tariffs, rather than passing them on to American shoppers. Trump pushed back on the suggestion that tariffs will lead to higher prices for goods in the US.
“You don’t know whether or not China is going to eat it,” Trump said. “China probably will eat those tariffs.”
________________
154% tariffs....Trump muses that China will "eat the tariffs"
So...An American importer orders a $100 dollar item from China...The cost is $245 dollars after tariffs....and Trump thinks China will pay the $145 dollar additional cost, ??????
China would be paying $45 dollars to the American importer and giving the imported item for free under Trump's brain-fart thought.
Simple math Trump doesn't understand....5 D Chess Trump claims to be playing playing....Trump's math is more like math from someone who took 5 hits of acid.
Cheers
Kind of off topic, but very interesting! I'd heard about this T-Bond thing but hadn't had a good explanation about it until now. https://deanblundell.substack.com/p/carneys-checkmate-how-canadas-quiet?triedRedirect=true
The proof will be in the pudding. The problem is not supply, but affordability, thus what housing is provided must meet the affordability issue, which really means subsidized housing.
What is happening in Metro Vancouver and most major cities is a land rush, by increasing the value of land by up-zoning it for multi story )read high rise) buildings.
Eby and the NDP are involved with this scam as is a certainly newly elected MP Gregor Robertson.
The last thing the provincial NDP or Vision(less) Vancouver Provincial wants is subsidized or social housing.
A repulsive character at best.
How he could even be considered a candidate says lots about the Conservatives.
TB
I hear you EE - thanks.
Why do you think that last bit is the case given how well things went on the south side of False Creek originally? Is it just developer capture or is it something more?
.
TB--
Indeed.
And as much as I do not support Mr. de Jong politically their booting of him was very, very telling.
.
Overall from where i sit on the mid Island a great result, and for the foreseeable future the punditry, nerds and junkies will be in political nirvana with the endless possibilities and scenarios to be played out
The lone surviving N.D.P. on the Island Gord Johns won quite handily thankfully, a genuinely nice man that has done a lot of good whilst in Ottawa. Quietly getting stuff done without seeking out a camera or a round of applause which his constituents recognised and appreciated by his substantial numbers and thus a fourth term.
Singh losing his seat was a blessing in disguise, he couldn’t shift the seat numbers beyond those the dippers have more or less traditionally held and had he got back in I believe not much would have changed. Getting hammered like this should be a the wake up call if they want to remain relevant at the federal level.
The chatter about P.P. losing his seat and the speculation that he will find someone to take a dive in a safe seat and then run in a by-election in the designated divers seat. My question is, who pays for that if it comes to pass.?
Canadian taxpayers shelled out for’ P.P’s election in his own riding which he lost and the designated divers riding which they won. As this is purely a conservative party strategy, should the conservative party be on the hook for the expense of running anther election as this is a conservative party strategy to elect someone that had their shot and was rejected in their home riding. ?
The below link to Steve Schmidt' latest podcast is pretty good...The last 2 minutes are worth watching.

Lastly.....Only a very foolish political Party would want to bring back PP as leader...his personal negatives are a perpetual drag on the Conservative party....So, strategically speaking, as a center left supporter....I hope PP does just that..Kick some elected Conservative member to the curb and backdoors his way to the top of the Conservative Party....A fool's errand indeed..
The Days of red underwear and Dave Barrett have long since passed..
Cheers
A word of warning on this, I am told that Snopes is still trying to verify that this is in fact true.
The only thing cheering me up a bit when Singh lost was PP also lost. PP is such a nasty piece of business I do wonder why so many people voted Conservative.
In Nanaimo/Ladysmith the NDP MP lost to the Conservative. Some times I do wonder how that happens but given the bi election prior to the last election, the Green Party candidate won and second place went to the Conservatives. Thought it was the increase in people from Alberta coming to Nanaimo. its not that any Conservative government has done anything to improve life for Canadians, unless they rich, i.e. rich enough to have Swiss bank accounts and Harper was P.M.
The decrease in NDP, M.P.s was expected. In previous elections the NDP lost seats after supporting a Liberal minority and the Liberals passed specific pieces of Legislation which the NDP championed. The NDP rebuilds and then it starts all over again.
There is just no accounting for taste or voting for people who make racist comments. The Island is changing, especially mid to upper Island. Its not only the influx of people from Alberta but from the mainland. Nanaimo's housing is less expensive, there are still some deals around, traffic is less congested, weather is better and skiing and golf are great. Came to the Island in 2000 to check on a buddy, for a few days. I'm still here but did move from the Comox Valley to Nanaimo 10 yrs ago.
Democratic Socialists would just fine.
With the many MAGAidiotsts in Alberta that would like to take fluoride out of the water, perhaps it could be replaced with salt peter to slow down their reproduction.
Anon-Above--
I agree that the demographics of the mid and upper island are definitely changing.
Personally, I'm of the opinion that there is an accounting for citizens who knowingly vote for a person who denies the significant negative impact of the residential school system.
I would, however, agree that there is no way to account for this if citizens do not know that the person they are voting for is such a denier. Which, of course, was precisely why, at least in part, the good Mr. Gunn did not appear at all candidate meetings and/or otherwise directly interact with the citizens of his riding.
.
Ahhh... Got it....Should they add 'of Canada' (i.e. the DSC) to distinguish from Bernie and AOC's 'DSA'?
.
GF--
The author of that post, the good Mr. Blundell, provides no verifiable evidence is the case. Emily Baron Cadloff of the National Observer provides evidence to the contrary and concludes that the claims are false.
.
Grant--
Do you think E. O'Toole would have survived the Trumpening and won?
.
Keith--
Thanks for the info about G. Johns.
The flip from Dipper to Con on the Island that jolted me most was Cowichan/Malahat/Langford.
.
No surprise about the NDP on the Island, it's called the E&N and both the NDP and Greens botched this ready made vote getter.
If anyone is serious about the environment and want to reduce auto traffic, rail is the only way to go.
Mr. O'Toole would not have survived the Trumpening of the Conservative party....The Conservative party made it quite clear, when Erin O'Toole was trying to bring the Cons to the center, when he embraced assault weapons bans, and progressive taxes he was promptly kicked to the curb by party apparatchiks.....The Cons were doomed when Trump poked the bear.....Fascinating.
I don't believe any association with any US group would be useful. I'm not familiar with this "DSA" group which may be considered some type of socialist group by US standards, which will never come to anything as they would not be compatible with the Democrats corporate sponsors
