Nevermind The US'ian Hopium...The Numbers That Matter Have Not Budged.

It's(NotJust)The
EconomyStupidVille

If you stop by a place like this with any regularity whatsoever, I would hope that you are the type of person who likes to pay attention factually verifiable news.

And if that's the case, it is very likely that you understand that, based on numerous criteria, things have not gone well for the Trump administration since the presidential inauguration.

And, given all that, if you are also of a progressive bent you may susceptible to the punditry of a certain class of opinion maker (and/or James Carville) that says US'ian public opinion is finally starting to turn away from Mr. Trump, for real.

And while I agree with reader Grant G. that you can find numbers in certain polling subcategories, especially the economic ones, that might give you some hope that such a turn is actually happening, it remains the fact that the numbers that really count have not moved one iota since last November.

To wit:

Now.

If you have bothered to read this far you may be screaming at the screen that we should ignore the numbers above because they were generated a couple of weeks ago in the burned out, fact-challenged bloviating backwater that is Mr. Murdoch's TeeVee neighbourhood.

Except.

This:

Personally, I find this to be very scary because it suggests that things will have to get so bad that the overwhelming majority of US'ian's feel real pain before a meaningful turn finally comes.

And, regardless how high we Canuckistanians put our elbows in the air, if that happens, we too will be reaching for the extra strength painkillers.

______
And don't start yelling in the comments
about the big swing that happened in those congressional special elections in Florida because, given the turnout and the fact that only people like us (i.e. people who are actually paying attention) vote in those things, they mean nothing...As for the Wisconsin Supreme Court election result? well, that might be Musk rather than Trump specific...
On second thought, feel free to yell in the comments...I don't mind.

The Americans are caught in a myth of "exceptionalism" and a dangerous "evangelicalism", which combined to turn one of the best educated nations into the world, to a "hillbilly" backwater and it is getting worse.

MAGA endures, simply because the cult promises good things to all people, once the radical left, drug gangs and other non believers are removed from the country.

We have seen this before, in 1933 and reinforced in 1939 and the outcome is, to say the least, very troubling.

MAGA is a cult which embraces ignorance over truth; dishonesty over honesty, and cowardice instead of valour. Herr Trump is the picture boy for the MAGA cult and there is no deprogramming of politcal cults.

The ignorance and imbecilic behavior will continue until things crash so bad that, like a phoenix, rising from the ashes, a new politcal movement will arise and it will not be the Democrats.

The USA is locked being a 18th century republic, government by 18th century laws and mores and the MAGA cult has shown that the American democracy has been subverted in a mere 60 days; it much venerated constitution nothing more than a scrap of parchment and now in 2025, the USA is revealed to be the same corn pone, racist, xenophobic republic, as it was before December 7, 1941.

It’s all Trumps fault. He’s been spending B.C. taxpayers money like a drunken fool at a peeler bar for the last 8 years. The NDP have been doing everything within their intellectual capacity to reel him in but when you add up the NDP caucus combined IQ and you don’t get to triple digits, well you can’t blame stupid. That’s against DEI.

What I will be interested to see is who Trump will blame when the U.S tanks financially so much that the GOP finds the courage to demand the tarrifs are reversed.Trump can’t-won’t back down no matter how bad it gets. His ego won’t let him. Then the Maga horde will have someone to direct their anger at.My bet would be on Lutnick. The approval ratings captured in those polls I think are showing that the voters can’t admit they screwed up! Yet!

Recent polling in the US has Dems at 29% favorability....a record low...Are they that unpopular...NO....Americans are mad at Dems because Dems haven't been able to stop Trump..

Here is a more recent poll...

https://www.forbes.com/sites/saradorn/2025/04/02/trump-approval-rating-tracker-most-americans-reject-tariffs-in-liberation-day-poll/

The American electorate...a very stupid bunch....Trump could do the worst job, get caught embezzling funds, Trump could beat a sick puppy to death on national TV and....

And still 70% to 80% of Republicans would vote for Trump, or vote for anyone under the Republican banner..

The rural/urban divide, the education divide, the racist divide...The USA is so polarized that Republicans will vote against their own interests just because......

Every US presidential election is decided by the moveable/persuadable 10% of voters..

Trump and or any Republican leader could start a great depression and still receive 40% of the vote..

over 20,000 gun related deaths every year in the USA...And gun control can't be passed....Republicans take away women's rights, and Republican women still vote GOP.

Trump is despised by most Americans...However, 70 to 80 percent of Republicans despise Dems even more..

10% Mr. K........Our only hope relies on 10% of the US electorate coming to their senses.

We are seeing - Hell, we are part of the demise of the USA as a coherent nation of law and moral fibre. The US empire lasted from 1945 to 2025, 80 years, which is about how long empires last these days.

Political hubris, combined with public ennui, perpetuated by a propaganda machine so vast, encompassing all media and entertainment, that the American public think themselves as "god given"!

It is all unraveling at hyper speed and soon the the once mighty USA will revert back to the days of
Jim Crow", segregation, lynchings, and all the odious apparatus of a "Gangster State".

Unless the military overthrows the present cabal in Washington, I would strongly avoid the USA. You may never return.

Time to close the border, time to ban X, Meta, and Fox News. Time to implement the Finish Education system to teach children to fact check and question everything in a logical order.

It is more than that. The American populace is now under the thumb of book burning, religious despots, where real education has been shelved and rote memorizing education has become the norm. The children are not taught to think only to obey.

HardCon neverTrumper Jonathan Last, pretty much agrees with you:

There are only three possible explanations as to why Americans voted for this man:

they wanted what he promised;

they didn’t believe what he promised; or

they didn’t understand what he promised.

Pick whichever rationale you want, because it doesn’t matter. Whatever the reason was, it exposed half of the electorate—the 77 million people who voted for Trump—as either fundamentally unserious, decadent, or weak.

And no empire can survive the degeneration of its people.

Thanks so much Anon-Above.

It's always nice when a wee bit of off-topic drive-by trolling clearly demonstrates why the bloom is off the Rustadian rose.

I agree that Mr. Lutnick is a good bet, but only if he can't hang the economic albatross around Joe Biden's leathered neck. Heckfire, there are already whispers how Mr. Trump's tariff obsession was re-kindled by the fact that Biden did not immediately repeal all of the tariffs imposed during Trump I.

Interesting comment. Gymnastics come to mind. Either sort of bombed or a weird sense of humour. Thank you for the laugh.

"hillbilly", good description of a lot of Americans regardless of how much money they have. some one I used to know used the term, "white trash".
It has always been of some interest to me that a country which made so many advancements in some areas were so back ward in others.
Why people vote against their own interests is still a question with no answer. It can't all be put down to being stupid. Americans do seem to follow others who have a great deal of money or fame and little in the way of brains, etc. Will it change? Don't think it will until there is a great deal of dying and people catch on trump et al don't give a shit about them.
