This Day In Snookland (ctd)....What's A Photo-Op Worth?

AllTheCashTheFits
ThatWon'tGoToFamiliesVille

Well.

In the case of today's little get together with Mr. Skulsky and the Boys down at the BC Place, and not for the first time...

A mere $2.7 million.

Bob Mackin had the story ages ago in BIV. Here's a small chunk his lede (but go read it all, especially for the shillophantic attempts to justify the largesse from PavCo):

...The service plan for BC Pavilion Corp. (PavCo), released with today's budget, shows a $2.7 million contribution from the provincial government "to assist in securing an event in 2014."

The $2.7 million figure also shows up beside "contribution for Grey Cup" in the 2012-13 fiscal forecast...

And the kicker?

According to the whispers on the Twittmachine at least, after the phot-op Ms. Clark did NOT face the music from the media on other matters that actually mean something of substance to the public at large.

As for facing the music from the public itself?

Well....

You know.

.

This Day In Snookland...Darn Those Wizards All To Heck...

...And The Private E-mails They Rode In On.

Why?

Because it is now absolutely clear that they cannot attempt to cover their tracks by destroying 'transitory' government E-mails while hiding behind 'private' E-Mail accounts to carry out so-called 'official' government business.

The following is from Mark Hume's interview with Information and Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Denham, published in the Globe last night:

Hume: It’s not in the report, but did it come up for discussion that government staff can use private e-mails to communicate and thereby avoid putting anything on the record?

Denham: Government agencies are required to follow the law when it comes to responding to FOI requests. My expectation is that government will follow the law, which would include the search of a private e-mail account for records that are responsive to the request.

So, if there are responsive records relating to government business and they happen to be in private e-mail, then the government is required to produce those records in response to an FOI request. … I think a lot of people, journalists and people in the public, don’t realize this, but e-mails that contain information about government mandate, government business, sent from a personal account, are subject to those FOI laws. And the determining factor is not the type of account, personal or government, but actually whether the e-mail relates to the performance of that employee’s or that contractor’s duties.

Now.

As reader EG pointed out in the comments to a previous thread, there may be compliance issues here. However, she also pointed out that anyone who has been working in/for government for any length of time actually knows, or should know, this.

So.

Either the Wizards just weren't paying attention...

Or, perhaps, they just thought they were above any and all real scrutiny when they were hatching their secret plans to funnel personal information collected by government into BC Liberal Party databases.

With respect to the latter possibility, the fact that the Premier's former deputy chief-of-staff, Ms. Kim Haakstad, did not mention the use of private E-mails by Premier's office staff to the Information Commissioner during the probe into the Boessenkool 'paperless' investigation certainly does nothing to rule it out.

There is another possibility, I suppose.

Which is that they got a little sloppy while attempting to follow the 'Dobell Doctrine'.

Ha!

This Day In Snooklandia...Look Who They're Smearing Now.

FalseEquivalencies
AreStillFalseVille

Last night we noted that Alex Tsakumis thinks Suzanne Anton, who was earlier rebuffed by the fine, creme-sheened folks of Vancouver-Quilchena is going to be parachuted into creme-free Fraserview.

You know, the riding where Kash Heed's campaign smeared the Dipper candidate Gabriel Yiu in 2009.

Which is also the same riding where Mr. Yiu will run this May.

And guess who the Wizards and their foot soldiers in the legislature were smearing today, with a complete false equivalency that even the proMedia folks can understand.

You guessed it...

Hon. B. Bennett: I'm sorry that the fact that I come from the Kootenays offends the member from Vancouver Island. He has three members from the Kootenays in his own caucus. I'm not sure how they're going to feel about his slight. In any case, hon. Speaker, perhaps the member will think that this is more relevant.

Perhaps the member who asked the question could tell us exactly who Gabriel Yiu is. Gabriel Yiu has collected almost $375,000 of public money since 2007, and what did he do? What was Gabriel Yiu up to? Well, Gabriel Yiu, according to his own website, was an adviser to the B.C. NDP opposition. He facilitated "unprecedented communication outreach into the Asian immigrant community at large, as well as cultivating…."

****

It's all deflector-spike-spin-all-the-time these days with these people.

Essentially, they are saying that...

The fact that Mr. Yiu has a government job (thus the terrible, awful $$ numbers over six years...try the long division) and ran as a candidate is the same thing as being a government-funded caucus staffer or government-funded inner circle Wizard who used their job to hatch political party smear sites and/or funnel government information to political party databases.

Now.

Why would these people engage in this twisted pretzel logic to conflate such clearly different situations?

Because if all parties are 'equally' guilty, nobody is really guilty, right?

Which is what one of the chief satellite-circle Wizards is now saying outside the legislature.

Or some such thing.

Sheesh.

This Day In Snookland (ctd)...Parallel Investigation Blues.

YouKeepOnUsingThatWord'Solidarity'
IDoNotThinkItMeansWhatYouThinkItMeansVille

Gosh.

I bet the Wizards' private Emails (and/or erasable whiteboards) are humming today.

Why?

Because, as we had an inkling of on Monday, it really does appear that Gordon Hogg is not one of them.

Rob Shaw has the story in the VTC. Here is his lede an a tiny bit more (but go read it all):

The chairman of the B.C. Liberal caucus has launched his own review into a multicultural ethnic outreach scandal, saying he has a moral obligation to investigate how taxpayer resources were used in the scandal.
Liberal MLA Gordon Hogg, who chairs the 45-person government caucus, said he launched the review because he has “a fiduciary responsibility to be able to respond to my caucus that the funds allocated for the purposes of caucus — work, research, communications — has been handled appropriately.”
Hogg’s investigation will parallel that of Premier Christy Clark’s deputy minister, John Dyble, who launched his own review last week...
{snippety doo-dah}

...The multicultural (strategy) document (that started the dual investigations) names numerous caucus officials as having apparent roles in the ethnic plan, including outreach director Lorne Mayencourt, executive director Primrose Carson, research director Blair Phelps and former communications officials Stephen Harris and Jeff Melland.
Carson is the top official in caucus, but Hogg said she ultimately reports to him...
{snippety doodle-dandy}
...Hogg has tapped Liberal MLAs Murray Coell and Rob Howard to help him conduct the investigation. Neither Coell nor Howard is seeking re-election...

Hmmmm...

There are issues with this approach in terms of the untouchables in the BC Liberal Party itself, but it kinda/sorta looks like, perhaps, these Three Muskateers, two of whom are Bully/Vader-proof, want to make sure the Wizards don't wriggle off that deep-seet hook of their own making.

Also, does it not signal something about Mr. Hogg's future intentions after the fall?

A newly SunNews-free Alex Tsakumis is reporting that the Snooklandians have dropped Ms. Anton into Kash 'The Stallion' Heed's soon-to-be old riding.

Most interesting, because...

It's not exactly safe-seat inner-West CremeVille.

And her opponent is a strong Dipper challenger in Gabriel Yiu,  who is the guy who was smeared by the Heed operation's campaign Manager (of Mojitos!) last time round.

'Say Anything' About BC Ferries.

WeWillSayAnythingToday
BecauseTomorrowWeWillTellYouSomethingCompletelyDifferentVille

Yesterday, CBC News was reporting that Christy Clark's Minister responsible for BC Ferries had some good news for British Columbians:

The B.C. government says no cost cutting changes to the BC Ferries service are planned before the upcoming May provincial election.

Transportation Minister Mary Polak released the Coastal Ferries Consultation and Engagement report on Tuesday summarizing public input following eight weeks of meetings last fall...

Of course, in true CClarkian Gov't fashion, BC Ferries told British Columbians the very bad news today:

Vehicle and passenger fares on all B.C. Ferries routes will rise April 1 by an average of 4.1 per cent.

B.C. Ferries made the announcement today, citing rising operating and capital costs. The increase was approved as part of a B.C. Ferries Commissioner’s order Oct. 1.

The increases are as follows:

- Prices for passenger and vehicle fares increase by 4.1 per cent on all routes across the fleet.

- Reservations made less than seven days in advance rise to $18.50 from $17.50 for the three major routes between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, the Horseshoe Bay to Langdale route and the Comox to Powell River route.

- The cost of 10 assured loading tickets will increase from $1,250 to $1,350.

Now.

To be 'fair' we are obligated to point out that Ms. Polak did mention yesterday that there will be future cuts (sigh) after the election:

...But Polak says to keep BC Ferries afloat financially, cuttting $26 million over the next three years is a necessity.

“We know that has to happen, and the communities were clear that they want us to talk to them about the technical conversation," she said.

Polak says cuts won't be coming before the May 14 provincial election, and there will be further consultation before any specific cuts are announced...

Hmmmm....

$26 million...

Where could those 'cuts' come from that would not affect something that British Columbians actually need?

How about....

$12 million for bogus Bollywood awards?

And...

$15 million for bogus (non) job ads designed to pump up the Facebook hits?

There's $26 million, and a little bit more right there.

OK?

This Day In Snookland...An Explanation For 'Oral Government' Emerges.

Ooooooooooeeww
What'sThatSmell?Ville

And, in my opinion, that reason really, really, really stinks.

Below is a written (i.e. not oral) statement from the Deputy Minister for Citizen Services and Open Government, Ms. Kim Henderson, responding to Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham's concerns about the fact that no one in the Premier's office ever writes anything down or ever uses their official government Email accounts for anything official:

"...I recognize that you were unable to find a single explanation for this trend of increasing “no responsive records” which is consistent with our own analysis. We too believe that the processing of multiple requests to ministries is a significant factor. For the increasing number of no records responses to the Office of the Premier, I would point out the Office of the Premier has had a dramatic increase in the number of requests overall and, has had an almost 200 per cent increase in the number of requests resulting in responsive records since 2009/10..."

You can find Ms. Henderson's entire letter to the Information Commissioner (which is copied to Ms. Lynda Tarras who produced no written records herself when she carried out the Boessenkool investigation) .....here.

****

Now.

I don't know about you, but I cannot believe this codswallop.

The offered explanation, from a BC Liberal Party Government Deputy Minister to the freaking Information Commissioner, is that nothing is written down because it would be just too much work if, as a result, somebody might actually ask to see it.

Which is complete and utter shite.

Not to mention completely and utterly ridiculous given what WE NOW KNOW was being passed around by these people, secretly, using non-governmental Email communication (which means it WAS written down and being hidden from FOI requests).

Regardless...

Let's just consider the logic here for a moment shall we?

If someone submits an FOI request and they get nothing....

Well, if that person is tenacious, and really wants to find out what is going on, are they not then going to submit more FOI requests trying to find the information they are looking for?

And, if that wasthe case wouldn't FOI requests go up as a result?

In other words, could not a reasonable and logical case be made that one of the reasons that FOI requests to the Premier's Office have increased significantly since the advent of Snooklandia (i.e. post 2010) is precisely because...

...No one is writing anything down.

****

These people really must go now.

All of them.

I mean, the fact that the letter excerpted above was cc'd to  Ms. Lynda Tarras with an explanation that is so blatantly obfuscatory really and totally is the last straw.

OK?

Will The 'Evidence' Collected In The Dyble Investigation Be Worth The Paper It Is NOT Printed On?

Documents?
WeDon'tNeedNoStinkin'Documents!Ville

___________

Update Late Tuesday....I have not hacked into The Dean's IBM Selectric, nor was I given an oral report on his latest copy in advance.....Promise.
___________

The next 'step' in the Dyble 'investigation', as noted by Global TeeVee's Jas Johal:

Look.

This thing is a farce of a farcicalistic far-far-far gone farcistude wrapped up in an electric farcking blanket composed of clanging frying pans filled to bursting with fermenting fareces on the full boil.

Or some such totally ridiculous thing.

Because the whole point of this oral offal of an office policy instituted by the (not)Premier and her minions is that it produces NO reliable record of anything.

In fact, in the case of the Boessenkool investigation, this is something that the Information and Privacy Commissioner has already established beyond a shadow of a (farce-free) reasonable doubt.

Thus, any and all hearsay that Mr. Dyble  manages to collect will be irrelevant in the extreme.

Or worse, depending on how such hearsay is subsequently packaged and flung back at us by the (not)Premier, her shillophants, and her surrogates who will simultaneously keep on saying that 'everybody does it'.

Which is why all this farcimonious codswallop that is being ladled out, non-stop, by the (not)Premier regarding the importance of this anti-investigation must be first derided for what it is, and then it must be completely ignored, no matter how upstanding a guy Mr. Dyble, a guy that was appointed by, and owes his job to, the (not)Premier's pleasure, is.

And there must be a real investigation.

By a special prosecutor with full and unfettered subpoena powers, and who is not linked to the BC Liberal Party in anyway, to get at ALL the documentation that does exist, including non-governmental Emails.

And if it turns out that the police officers that do the prosecutor's digging, officers who must not be linked to the BC Liberal Party in anyway, determine that anyone was transferring personal data and information that was collected under the auspices of official government business, as is very, very strongly suggested by the actual, non-farcical documentary evidence already at hand in both the  'Multicultural Strategy' and the 'Embrace BC' cases....

Well...

Then that person or persons should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

And if they are found guilty of wrongdoing they must NOT be indemnified to the tune of six million dollars or even 1 six millionth of the (now) farcical penny.

OK?

______
And, honestly, given all this oral offal, how do we know that the collection of personal data by the government followed by an apparent transfer to BC Liberal party databases  has not been occurring as a result of other initiatives that were hatched in the (not)Premier's office...Initiatives like, for example, all those Women 4 Christy events....Or the 'Mommy Blogger' thingy, wherein citizens are actually being told that anything they leave on the site could be funnelled to government databases as Laila discovered?....Seriously, how would we know that wasn't the case?....Because Christy Clark said so?...Or, perhaps the Elevator Runner (watch video till the end)....Please....Don't make me laugh that hard right before bedtime...

Rob Shaw, who now works for Mr. Radler's ever growing stable of newspapers, had the story on the Twittmachine a little earlier:

Interestingly enough, the good Mr. Bonney has worked in both Ms. Clark's and Mr. Campbell's regimes. He is currently out of reach of Mr. Dyble's investigation however, as he has now returned to the highly privatized private life of the extremely vital and extremely productive land of corporate association hoods. This Day In Snookland...Despite The 'I Will Not Go!' Talk, The Herd Has Turned.

There'sNoPunditry
LikeAPuffedUpPunditryVille

Now that the voting on the faux ShamWow of a budget is done, I hear, via the Twittmachine, that Ms. Clark is running around today telling anyone who will listen that she will not step down no matter what the fall-out is from whatever scandal or seven has befallen her in the last five minutes.

But....

Remember last spring when our (not)Premier was telling us how she has always been a Filapina in her heart of multicultural voter manipulation strategy-type hearts...

And remember how Keith Baldrey couldn't figure out why the average British Columbian was not buying the act?

And remember too how, not long after that, Ms. Clark said that nobody really reads (a then mildly critical) Vaughn Palmer or even listens (gasp!) to CKNW anymore?

Well....

I wonder if Ms. Clark will soon start telling us about the irrelevancy of all of the local proMedia pundits all the time.

Because, these days, said pundits appear toall be running as one towards the little hamlet of Snooklandia with mayhem and destruction bursting to get out of their own size-or-two too-smallish-sized hearts.

Case in point... the NaPo's Brian Hutchinson has already taken a rip-saw and pile-driver to Snooklandia's outer buildings:

...Ms. Clark, her party loyalists and some advisors are allowing the crisis to fester. Among other tactics, they pretend the scandal is about 'inappropriate' language while prematurely insisting that nothing unlawful has happened...

{snippety doo-dah}

...So: The Premier claims to want to "get to the bottom" of the matter. But she assigned her own deputy minister and head of the B.C.'s civial service' -a man she chose for office- to lead an internal investigation. That does not make for a serious, uncompromising inquiry...

Meanwhile, the VSun's Mr. Palmer, who appears to have gotten to the scene first, is now standing back to show the catapult launchers precisely where the wagons are being circled around Snooklandia's inner buildings:

...I’ve left the day’s most cynical gesture to the end, namely the announcement that cabinet minister John Yap, whose bailiwick includes responsibility for multiculturalism, was stepping down pending the outcome of the Dyble review.

He was not the minister at the time this outrage was concocted. The man in charge was the premier’s hand-picked serial bungler, Harry Bloy. Yap’s name is nowhere in the fatal documentation, unlike those of various Clark staffers who remain at their posts and on the public payroll...

And the man who is running as fast as he can back and forth to every publication (and/or strange political befellowian-type blog) in town, Mr. Martyn Brown, seems to be using both of his horns in an attempt to gore anything that moves deep within Snooklandia's inner sanctum, especially if it does not have an old 'Golden Era' sticker on it:

...All cabinet ministers must now ask themselves whether they can honestly stand in solidarity behind their leader in light of the problems that have befallen the government under her watch.

If they cannot, they must say so in private – in cabinet and/or in caucus – and they must act accordingly, by either replacing the leader or by tendering their resignation...

{snippety doo-dah}

...It would be incredibly hard to fight an election prompted by a vote of non-confidence triggered by the Premier’s response to a scandal that her office caused and that has offended so many voters...

And even the Globe's Gary Mason, who was initially off in the weeds, seems to be back smack-dab-in-the-middle of the herd, working shoulder to shoulder with his old buddy Ron Obvious, in an effort to help nudge things along:

...(T)he scene in the legislature said it all about the carnage this issue has caused for the governing party, which was already trailing badly in the polls before it blew up. The entire Liberal caucus sat silently as Ms. Clark answered question after question. A few bowed their heads for extended periods of time. It was as if they knew there is little that can be done now to turn the Liberal ship of misfortune around...

_______

And why no Mr. Smyth?....Well, really....Why bother?
