I was listening to one of my favourite podcasts the other day. It's by two smart guys who are politically aware but who mostly talk about other things that pique their interest.
Things like bird calls, geo guesser, guitar pedals, the difference(s) between lakes and ponds, and the world's most awesome skylines.
Anyway, this week, one of the pair, who lives in Los Angeles, mentioned how, except for occasional snippets on the news, he wasn't even aware of the ICE/National Guard/US Marine activities in his city.
Again, this is coming from someone who is very politically aware.
Which is why the incident with with US Senator Alex Padilla really matters.
And not just because of the outrageous actions of overzealous uniformed officers who led the senator away, forced him to the ground, and hand-cuffed him.
But because the resulting hullaballoo has ensured that everyone has also now heard the following statement by a senate-confirmed member of Mr. Trump's cabinet about the situation in Los Angeles:

"...We are staying here to liberate the city from the socialists and the burdensome leadership that this governor and that this mayor have placed on this country and what they have tried to insert into the city..."
In other words, this particular cabinet member was announcing that the Trump administration was using the military to occupy a city where the explicit, stated goal is to destroy that city's democratically elected government.
And now every American, not just the fine folks who watch FOX News, knows of that statement thanks to Mr. Padilla.
Which means that every American also now knows that the Trump administration is an autocracy.
Of course...
Whether every American understands what they now know is, unfortunately, another matter.

And, also unfortunately, there is no longer a Cronkite around to help them acquire such understanding.
On the flip side, even more unfortunately, there are bushels of Rogans all set to do exactly the opposite.

the cabinet officials comments were funny. then there were other cabinet and sub cabinet types along with the pres boy. 'at one level it was hard to stop laughing. they lied, they lied, they lied and kept lying. then of course you remember people are actually going to believe them. don't know what the boys and girls who are hanging around are going to get out of it, but they might want to remember trump doesn't share and those who do business with him, well remember Mr. Cohen and others.
No one but Trump is going to get rich out of the scheming. some may make it all the way to prison. at some level its shocking but then when you look at history, no its not. This is how dictators eliminate a democracy. Too many have too much to loose and won't oppose Trump. some of his "cabinet" types are a joke. its funny to watch. One is dumber than the next. they're good at telling their version of events but don't take it to the bank. I'd say within a couple of months the democracy to the south of us will be gone and the country under marshall law. Lets not forget his grandfather ran a bordello and bar in B.C. during a gold rush. His father refused to rent to people of colour. Trump 3, he managed to walk away from bankruptcys quite well leaving others with nothing. No one should be surprised by trump's actions. Yes it is unfortunate there is no longer a Cronkite. News readers these days are just on air personalities and are only as good as the guy typing for them is. the media is doing a piss poor job of it. do wonder what the Generals are doing, the billionaires, the large corporations, etc. Well I don't wonder, they're looking for their exit.
After a near death experience 14 years ago and a very long recuperation, to pass the time away I decided to get a better understanding of the US politic.
It started with 3 Democratic posters on Facebook and 3 Republican posters on Facebook and read what they were posting.
It was very soon apparent that the Republican lot were all very "Born Again", corn pone types and the Democratic lot were retired University types.
Over the years only one remains and he is a real curmudgeon laureate, who regularly ends up in Facebook jail, for telling it like it is (something that Meta does not like at all)!
Of the Republican posters two turned out to be Russian botts and one was a pure fraudster, who raised funds using another Republican "Born Again" name and fake account.
Thoughts and prayers to them all.
Out of this years long study comes an opinion shared by many "left leaning" types south of the border and that is what we see in the USA is now the the culmination of a decades long coup d'etat by the Republican party to take total control of the USA from the godless communists (anyone who is not racist or evangelical christian), which started after the Kent State murders and refined under the Ronnie Raygun administration.
The final pieces of the puzzle were the corporatization of the mainstream media, starting with FOX News and a populist but utterly ignorant presidential candidate, which they got with Trump. Added to this, the politicization of the "rule of law", will ensure that the final piece of the puzzle will fit.
The USA's utterly corrupt and ossified politcal system, which largely has remained unchanged since 1776, ensures that this slow motion coup d'etat will succeed.
The mainstream media is dead, both in Canada and the USA, thus the Fourth Estate only champions the backers of the coup.
What we are seeing today is history and possibly the "end of empire", where the United States, gorged on Hollywood history, racism, evangelical religion, ignorance and utter and complete greed will fade into history as a footnote, of how the mighty have fallen.
