Given the timing of the piece, Ms. Thompson was writing about the joiners, enablers and go-along-to-get-alongers of a different, but not entirely ideologically dissimilar, group that was also identified by a four letter acronym.
In other words, at present there is nothing truly new happening under the Southern California sun.

Made a lot of trips back and forth across the Salish Sea over the last few months and I still enjoy riding those boats - especially compared to the bloody Krautrock ferries that killed all the local joiners jobs.
Leaving aside the destruction of our local union-made shipbuilding industry for the moment...
On those bloody Celebrations it's really noticeable how cheap/not built to last everything is.

The dictator wannabe TACO Trump, abetted by the corporate media and the rest of the ultra right wing fanatics is laying the foundation for a military dictatorship in the USA.
It is the Nacht und Nebel brigade, otherwise known as ICE, kidnapping the innocent to spread terror in Los Angeles.
This was the dry run and the military did what Trump wanted, without a quiver, without questioning the order, even though it was illegal.
The long, decades long Coup d'etat is now coming to conclusion. Trump has the cards; the military and the vile henchmen to make it happen.
And when the USA is subjugated with tens of thousands of its people jailed in gulags and re-education centres, the Trump thirst for more will not be sated and he will turn his eyes Northward to Canada to spread his evil bile.
It is the end of times as we enter a new age of A.I. controlled populations, conditioned not to ask questions, with the corporate elites run the show, with the likes of Trump, Putin and other despots acting as front men.
It is time for Canada to go nuclear because we are all too fast entering the dystopian era of 1984 and Metropolis combined; the new feudalism.
It is rather ironic that in Germany, those Krautrock ships were also built with union labour. A late friend was an engineer for BC Ferries and the boats were know as Das Zitrones. Both BC Ferries and the BC government kept hidden the real cost of these boats, including the massive scouring at the docks, which cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rectify.

God help us, the utterly daft Eby has inked a deal with China to build four ferries in China.
Has he seen the memo that Canada is in trouble and major infrastructure projects should be built in Canada?
Or, as I suspect, handlers in China organized the deal!
The Chinese are noted for not producing a satisfactory product and I predict that these boats, like the Das Zitronies, will become maintenance hogs.
Why not just build more Spirit Class boats, because all the kinks have been worked out and they would have much less maintenance costs.
What seems cheaper up front, tends to cost a hell of a lot more over time.
But with former NDP hacks such as chair and former finance minister Joy MacPhail and former NDP government bureaucrats Eric Denhoff and Lecia Stewart on the board of directors a fiaso will ensue. Just look what they did to TransLinkl!

I'd prefer the build the same sort of ferries which they have floating around that are 40 and 60 yrs old. They just keep sailing along. Some times when I get on one of those old ferries I think, omg I'm 75 and those ferries are almost as old as me. I still feel safer on them than any other ferries.
As to giving the contracts to China, I'm not keen on it but I'll get over it. awarding the contracts to China may turn out to be a good thing. Lets not forget we may need help when trump decides to move north. N.Z. or Australia is looking better all the time. Europe is a long way away and they may be dealing with Russia. Japan remains low key so here we go.........
