ABCVille
From a 2023 Daily Hive piece by Kenneth Chan that itself was based on a Metro Vancouver Regional District report released that same year:
..(I)n 2021, there were 305,335 households in Vancouver, including 138,845 ownership households (45%) and 166,490 renter households (55%)...
So.
What does ABC Vancouver think they should do for renters who have, say, difficulty with their landlords?
Absolutely nothing according to a piece by Jen Schuermann who covers city hall for Rogers:
Vancouver city council has decided against bringing back an agency designed to protect renters.
Coun. Lucy Maloney’s motion to bring back the Renter Office was voted down on Wednesday.
Established in 2018, the Renter Office provided information and assistance to tenants about their rights.
In 2023, however, ABC Vancouver voted to defund the office, despite city staff recommending that the service be continued...
Quelle surprise!

ABC, just taking orders from their corporate masters. By the way, where is the NDP?
Oh yeah, Eby is off on a government Fam Trip to Asia, or put another way, the Premier got out of Dodge fast. Far too many problems to deal with.
Gee, ir 55% is greater than 45% why would politicians piss off the 55%. Not too bright ABC. Time to re visit this. All those new towers being built won't have more owners but rather renters. As problems evolve renters could become a bigger force than owners. The owners may not be corporations but simply investors.
All these new high rises aren't going to help people find housing. Those condos will be too expensive for singles and families. They are also not being built in a manner that is conducive to living a connected life. The developers, builders, real estate agents are all making money but 18 to 40 story buildings do nothing help Vancouver remain a livable city. Forcing people into small boxes does nothing for people's mental health. Vancouver has always had green space, even in the West End. Buildings were set back from the side walk, they had front lawns, trees, etc. Walking in the West End back in the 70s was pleasant. Oh well there go the neighbourhoods.
Vancouver has always had more renters than owners, especially in recent times. If you are a politician, you ignore them at your peril. It's called the Left Coast for a reason.
