It seems that a lot of folks on the progressive side of the ledger and/or Althia Raj of the Star are aghast that Mark Carney is playing footsie with our oiligarchs while introducing an omnibus 'strong borders' bill.
But what did they/we expect?
After all, as Eric Scrimshaw has pointed out, we progressives made our choice when we elected a progressive conservative/pink tory to keep the whackaloons from gaining power.
Given that, it makes perfect sense, from a hard-nosed realpolitik point of view, for Carney to cut two of the stoutest whackaloonian legs out from under them while at the same time doing what's right for stability and the business environment.
Heckfire.
If noted pink tory from days of yore Robert Stanfield hadn't dropped that football on the tarmac in North Bay Ontario in 1974 it wouldn't be a stretch to suggest that he would have espoused similarly themed pre-millennial policies back in the day.
______
It turns out that the roll of film shot by Canadian Press photographer Doug Ball that day in 1974 had a number of shots of Mr. Stanfield catching the ball as well...It was the Globe and Mail that chose the dropsie shot for its front page, a decision that many folks figure caused Stanfield's demise and electoral loss to Trudeau senior that year.

Subheader?...This was a phrase Pierre Trudeau used to deride Stanfield's call for wage and price controls during the 1974 election campaign. Of course, the following year Trudeau instituted both.

This brings back one of my earliest political sarcastic remarks/thoughts.
Gawd, looks like me trying to catch a badly passed ball (in my opinion) in a rugby game!
We are in a new age and this bill (whether it passes or not and survives the senate) is to appease Taco Trump and his sidekick puppet.
For one, our border is far too fluid and a tightening of rules and regulations is needed. Gone are the days when I biked down to the Point on a Sunday (Sunday's were dry in BC then) to quaff a few at the Breakers and the Reef, and merely waved at the US border guards who waved back and said "glad you are not driving".
Life was so much simpler in the boomer times.
As for the carbon tax, it was and always will be a general tax masquerading the fact the government doesn't give a damn about the environment. Until the feds nationalize the "track" of the CN and CP and electrify the railways, the carbon tax will be just a revue generator, mostly hurting the poor and the elderly.
I agree with you comment regarding '''mostly hurting the poor and the elderly". Some of these taxes were peddled as the people who use the fuel should pay for it. However if you make min. wage and have to travel by vehicle by work and 50% of your wages go to rent while some one making $200K a year pays the same tax on fuel, it very unfair and unequal. But it works for the well to do. All these various taxes just require more paper work for businesses and consumers. It might be time to forget all the nickel and dime taxes and have a more fair tax system where those who make less don't have to support the wealthy withh all their tax deductions, trusts, etc. Perhaps a wealth tax might be better.
As to the quest to build high rises for people in need of supportive housing, give your heads a shake. Its a receipe for problems, ie. crime, noise, drugs etc. Remember in high school some classes had 4 or 5 kids who were a "little wild". There were always problems in those classes. Smaller classes with fewer "problems" made for an easier life for every one. Supportive housing ought not to be higher than 4 or 5 stories and placed in every city and town. Some may say we can't afford it but trust me, what we are doing now isn;t exactly cost effective. Certainly don't blame the people in Kits for objecting to the supportive housing in a high rise.
Robert Stanfield! .....was he the last right wing leader to be an actual conservative?......maybe Little Joe Clark was one as well.
Stanfield was at least kind of respectable, unlike those that came after that were all from the Chicago/Calgary fascist factory.
