As Long As There Are Stars Above You.

Brian Wilson has died.

Ben Sisario has an excellent omnibus obituary up at The New York Times (web archive link):

..“Being called a musical genius was a cross to bear,” he (Wilson) told Rolling Stone in 1988. “Genius is a big word. But if you have to live up to something, you might as well live up to that.”...

Indeed.

Yup - hope he finds/hears what he is looking/listening for.

Saw them years ago in Vancouver. RIP Brian Wilson.

Which version Chuck - with or without Brian?

Not there aren't plusses for both - just different. For example, when they were Brianless it looks like Carl usually took the lead on 'God Only Knows'.

A lot going on in that year of 1977!

I saw them approximately 40 years ago in Regina. It was a lot of fun with so the much of the crowd singing along, although the tacky blow up palm trees were pretty silly.

JP--

Would it be unreasonable to suggest that Mr. Love was (and still is?) responsible for said tackiness?

I was pretty sure 1977 yeasterday, but it could have been earlier. In the 70 s.

That would be my guess. Not exactly my dream concert at the time as my musical interests were not with them, but, the combination of the lack of entertainment in that part of the world and a true desire to see then at some point and time, it worked out rather well.
An opportunity to see a beach boys/beatles revue band at the proper location and a reasonable price is always on my radar due to the general fun factor.

I hear you JP - thanks.

My respect for Wilson grew over the years too - I took their music for granted in the 60s and only later realized how hard they worked to create what seemed to be an effortless sound.

As someone who came of age in the '70's I, too, thought of the Beach Boys as passe.

Everything changed when I tramped around Australia in the early 80's - The entire country was mad for them. I got hooked, mostly on the hits, but then I finally started to listen to Pet Sounds all the way through - amazing.
