Robo-Recall....Did Elections Canada Ignore Patient Zero?

Late Night Thursday Update.....Dave wonders if, perhaps, there was a King Rat afoot working the 'swing' ridings.... More on that possibility to come...

Lawrence Martin, writing in The Globe today, brings up a story that we in Lotusland who have been paying attention have been well aware of for some time now:

...To cast a bit of light, let’s go back to the 2008 election in the closely contested B.C. riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands. The incumbent was the apple-cheeked Conservative Gary Lunn. Midway through that campaign, Julian West, the NDP candidate, dropped out owing to revelations of a public nudity scandal from years earlier. But his withdrawal didn’t come in time to get his name off the ballot.

The federal election was on Oct. 14. At dinnertime on Oct. 13, an automated phone message went out urging constituents, strangely enough, to vote for Mr. West. And it appeared to have some effect: He received 3,667 votes, almost 6 per cent of the total. A poll a few days earlier had showed him at 1 per cent. This was good news for Mr. Lunn. The bulk of those votes might otherwise have gone to the Liberal candidate, who lost to Mr. Lunn by 2,625 votes....

Now.

How come everyone in Canada did not know about this before the last day or three?

Well....

It turns out that Elections Canada chose not to fully investigate the matter.

Not because they they found any evidence that the misleading calls did not actually take place.

Instead, they said that there was no evidence that anyone's vote had actually been changed because of them.

Andrew MacLeod of The Tyee was all over the story at the time:

The Commissioner of Canada Elections' office investigated possibly fraudulent (2008) election eve phone calls made in the Saanich-Gulf Islands riding during the federal election, but will not pursue charges.

“Our investigator found no one who had actually been influenced in their vote because of the purported telephone call, nor was he able to identify the source or the person or persons who actually made the calls,” said a Feb. 12 letter on Elections Canada and Commissioner of Canada Elections letterhead from legal counsel John Dickson to one of the people who complained. “Our investigation will now be concluded.”....

But here's the thing.

In our system your vote is a secret.

So.

Wasn't E-Canada's reason for not investigating an act that was clearly designed to subvert an open, honest and fair vote clearly preposterous?

There is something else (perhaps much more?) interesting in Mr. Martin's latest that I was not aware of that may be worthy of further investigation, which is the following..."The (Conservative) party had a separate team, he (Lunn Campaign manager Byng Giraud) said, that worked on swing ridings...."

There's another factor that no one has been writing about on robocalling.

After listening to someone who directly received an abusive robocall, how many voters, indirectly, changed their mind because of what they had heard at work, at church, at home, at the coffee shop, who then chose to vote differently than what they had intended to on May 2?

They voted for the Conservatives.

Currently Elections Canada is saying that only those people who received an odd phone call during the election will be listened to, but what if........ there were more people than just those that were targeted?

Excellent points NVG.

I reckon that the real point is that misrepresenting oneself, in any way, during an election is anti-democratic, plain and simple.

And isn't it interesting that the talking pointy heads are trying to shift the emphasis to the process of robocalling itself rather than what was actually being said....

Harper had a convicted American felon working for him, Bruce Carson. Felon Carson and his ex prostituted girlfriend were guests in Harper's home. When Harper was caught with Carson...Carson mad a mad dash back to the U.S.

An American site called presscore, said Harper's election was rigged. That Harper's win was needed to, start implementing the NAU. Some of the robocalls came out of North Dakota. Robocalls in the U.S....Are used as a tool, to discredit the opposition's opponets. Very, very common in the U.S. I am very suspicious, because of Bruce Carson working for Harper. Something really stinks about that.

Harper gave a speech in New York, at the Council of Foreign Relations. In Sept 25/2007. Harper fully endorsed the NAU.

Now suddenly, Obama is starting to build the Key Stone pipeline?

The Federal election was compromised, by the robocrimecalls. The election isn't valid, and should not be condoned.

I live in this riding and my recollection of the time is that there were 3 weeks to re-print ballots. I would think that one run of ballots could have been produced if there was a will by elections Canada. It seems to me that the staff there have become lazy and seem to make decisions to make less work for themselves. Another example of this is to not investigate the election fraud of 2008 any further. They came up with the opinion of 'no harm done' to save themselves a lot of trouble. That is certainly not how the voters in this riding felt at the time.
I for one will not be holding my breath for any sort of positive outcome of their investigation into this newest scandal according to their history. One possible bright light is that there are so many eyes on them right now which may just light a fire under their collective butts and actually accomplish something.

Anon-Above

And thus my snippetying of all the blah, blah, blah in the middle of the so-called press release....

Essentially, it was an 'explanation' about why they cannot and will not say anything except report to parliament as an endgame.

"They said that there was no evidence that anyone's vote had actually been changed because of them."

So if you try a coup d'etat through a manipulated election and fail to have a clear and significant effect... there's no evidence that your illegal actions caused you to win so no investigation?

And if you try the coup d'etat and succeed... well you own the country now and again no investigation. Something's wrong here.

Yuppers.

It's as Christy Clark said, shrilly, on the Ceeb, immediately after the Vancouver mayoral James, not Jim, Green election of Sam Sullivan of 2005.....

"You can't steal an election in a democracy!"
