That 'Designation' Thing.

It would appear that the so-called boys that former vicelandian and on again/off again/on again rebel rouser Mr. Gavin McInness unleashed upon us are in the news again.

Here is the latest from Rob Gilles of the Associated Press:

The Canadian government designated the Proud Boys group as a terrorist entity on Wednesday, noting they played a pivotal role in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6...

{snip}

...The terrorist designation in Canada means the group may have assets seized and face harsher terrorism-related criminal penalties. A government official said just because they are a member doesn’t mean they will be charged with a crime, but if they do engage in violent acts they could be charged with terrorist crimes.

Sending money to the organization or buying Proud Boys paraphernalia would also be a crime.

“The group and its members have openly encouraged, planned, and conducted violent activities against those they perceive to be opposed to their ideology and political beliefs,” the Canadian government said in briefing materials.

“The group regularly attends Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests as counter-protesters, often engaging in violence targeting BLM supporters. On January 6, 2021, the Proud Boys played a pivotal role in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.”

The government calls the Proud Boys a neo-fascist organization with semiautonomous chapters located in the United States, Canada, and internationally. It said it engages in political violence and that members espouse misogynistic, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, and white supremacist ideologies.

“Since 2018 we have seen an escalation towards violence for this group,” (Public Safety Minister) Blair said...

Meanwhile, south of the border, American national security blogger Emptywheel notes the following:

...(Y)esterday, (the United States) DOJ announced the arrest of yet another Proud Boy — Ethan Nordean — and the indictment of two other Proud Boys, Nicholas DeCarlo and Nicholas Ochs, in a conspiracy to hinder Congress’ certification of the Electoral College vote. Of particular note, in DOJ’s request for detention with Nordean, they invoked the list of crimes that can merit a terrorist enhancement...

Now.

I'm quite certain that pushback like the following, fully amplified by the free speech warriors screaming 'Cancel Culture!' after they're done wurlitzering the right of the freshman congress person from Georgia to support calls for the assassination of a fellow lawmakers, etc., will show up on a TeeVee near you soon:

...Enrique Tarrio, the (current) chairman of Proud Boys, called the terrorist designation “ridiculous.”

“There is no basis for it. It’s infringement of free speech rights. All the Canadian Proud Boys have ever done is go to rallies,” Tarrio said in a phone interview...

The only problem with this strate(r)gy is that the so-called boys of the seventh sin have left a whole lot of digital evidence in their wake, as is their M.O.

In fact, digital wake blazing has always been the M.O. of their founder, Mr. McInnes, as demonstrated by the following (warning, the video below is truly disturbing):

OK?
