On Friday January 10th of this year, the Federal government of Canada announced that the subsidy or 'incentives' for zero emission vehicle (iZEV) purchases were going to end when the remaining $72 million ran out at the end of March of this year, whichever came first:
...The iZEV Program was scheduled to pause on March 31, 2025, or once all the available funding has been accessed by Canadians. Canadians will benefit from incentives until Program funds are exhausted...
So.
Guess what happened over the weekend that followed?
Marco Chown Ovid of the Toronto Star has that story:
...(A) single Tesla dealership in Quebec City claimed nearly $20 million in public subsidies by saying it sold more than 4,000 electric vehicles over a single weekend...
{snip}
...Four Tesla dealerships stand out for their timely salesmanship — two in Toronto, one in Vancouver and one in Quebec City. They went from selling several dozen cars per day to as many as 2,500 electric vehicles on the Saturday before the public funding ran dry, according to the data.
Together, the four Tesla dealerships declared sales of 8,600 EVs and were able to claim more than $43 million in rebates over the weekend of Jan. 10-12 — gobbling up more than half of the $71.8 million in program funding that had been remaining on Friday morning.
By Monday, the government informed all dealerships nationwide that its funds had been exhausted and the iZEV rebate program was over....
Imagine that!

The link to the Transport Canada statistics that the Star used to generate the graph at the top of the post is...Here.
Please note: This is not the same as the BC government's recent decision to stop subsidies for installing Tesla chargers.

I call Bull Pucks on those sales. There isn’t enough minutes in the day to sell 2500-4000 cars in a weekend from a single dealership. The paperwork etc for one vehicle takes at least an hour and usually more. I hope someone with the government is looking into this because it kinds smells.
Graham--
I agree that it needs to be looked into by Transport Canada and, according to some reports, that is the case...
But, if one were to offer an opinion about how and why such a thing might happen hypothetically immediately after the announcement of the sunsetting of such a program...
What if a company wanted to give its future customers cost certainty that included the subsidy/incentive?
Well...
If the company itself were to buy up all those vehicles and pocket the subsidies/incentives, wouldn't that allow them to sell the vehicles at a reduced price to entice customers to buy?
Of course, one could also opine that such an hypothetical plan of action could also be used to increase the profit margin if only part of the subsidy was built into the 'new' price.
Or some such thing.

This is "sharp practice" which maybe illegal and from what I have read, the RCMP are investigating.
Musk and Tesla have gone "radio active" around the world and the Tesla dealers know that the car is fast becoming an Edsel, so to speak.
With the Carbon Tax demise and the realization that electric cars are not the great cure all for Global Warming and Climate Change coupled with Musk's Nazi leanings, the dealers are getting out with as much cash as they can.
Hopefully some end up in gaol.
It might be a good idea for some police departments to have a check of the records and see who these vehicles had allegedly been sold to. If the dealership or one of their sales people purchased all the vehicles, we have a problem and it would be nice for Crown prosecutors to find something to charge those dealerships. The money was set for a specific purpose, not to enrich dealerships which may be tanking. If the dealerships expect to tank, they ought to sue Musk. He obviously doesn't care about the dealers. The dealers may want to sue Musk.
What a bunch of creeps
Mind you Musk's boys have shown up at a second agency and said they had F.B.I. agents with them and forced their way in. Reminds me of old westerns where the rich guy owned the whole town and ignored the sheriff or just killed him.
As I thought…
“ Who owns Tesla dealerships?
Unlike other car manufacturers who sell through franchised dealerships, Tesla sells directly to consumers. It has created an international network of company-owned showrooms and galleries, mostly in urban centers.”
From Investopedia.
So, if Tesla owns the showrooms then indeed it is Tesla that is fudging the books here and doing as Ross has suggested. They are “buying” their own vehicles in order to assure future customers they will get the rebate or Tesla is enriching itself. Either way it should be illegal and those rebate funds should be disqualified.
