The Falcon Or The Ostrich?

NevermindAllThoseHistoricalBarbariansAtThe
GatesOfTheWestVille

The Lotuslandian political party with the nonsensical name just watched one of its climate change denying members take a walk over to the wild side:

Former longtime B.C. Liberal MLA John Rustad has crossed the floor to join the B.C. Conservatives, becoming the latter party's only elected member months after he was tossed from his old caucus.

Rustad, who represents Nechako Lakes in northern B.C. west of Prince George, made the announcement on Thursday...

And how did the (fairly) newly minted leader of the BC Liberal Party, a guy who is always ready to run with a low road running, right wing trope-assisted, smear when the politically expedient time is right, respond?

Well...

BC'ers don't think of themselves as left or right wing?

Sure thing Mr. Falcon.

Sheesh.

Image at the top of the post?....From a great blog post by Rod Mickleburgh from a few years ago in which he waxes poetic on the super fine first summer of Dave Barrett's Barbarians in 1972...My only question about the photo is why, exactly, does it appear that Jack Webster is getting ready to pop Davey a short right?
Earworm in the second line of the subheader?....This!
Tip 'O the Toque to reader Bob F. for the heads-up as I would have missed this given that the good Mr. Shaw has long blocked me from his Twittmachine feed...

I am sure there are many individuals involved in provincial politics who can easily and accurately be classified as right-wing.

I am not sure there are any who can classified as left-wing. Those types would be easily identified since they'd stand out as real radicals.

Point taken Norm.

Well I'm sure if Falcon scraped the barrels of his party he mind find folks who would beg to differ with that absurd assertion. If not right or left, why are they so concerned with the name and secondly, why would they choose a decidedly right winger as their leader? May I suggest the name the "Old BC Liberals" instead of the new ones they tried to shove down our throats during the Cluck Cluck era . Tim

Tim--

Or, perhaps, 'Old Stock' BC Liberals?

In the best 'dog whistle' sense of the term, of course.

The Conservatives won approximately 33% of the vote in the last federal election. Conservative parties form government in six provinces, and center-right parties form government in two others.

In the last federal election, British Columbians matched the national average, with 33% voting Conservative. Where do they all go come BC provincial election time? Surely not to the NDP.

Mr. Falcon is wishfully attempting to make the electorate fit his party’s new name. Good luck with that. It’s not the electorate with the identity crisis. It’s the conservatives hiding behind the Socred/Liberal/United label.

Personally, I'm waiting for the day, which I assume is coming soon, in which the good Mr. Falcon declares himself to be neither red nor blue but, instead, purple...

I think Falcon is in trouble. The best he can do is moan about a 10 lane bridge instead of a 8 lane tunnel replacing a perfectly good 4 lane tunnel under the Fraser River.

The NDP 8 lane tunnel, replacing a perfectly good tunnel under the Fraser underlines the fact that this is being built strictly for photo-ops at election time. Falcon's 10 lane bridge is more like "penis envy" and he wants a bigger one.

10 lane 8 lane, where will the traffic go? Richmond roads are at capacity and there is no new crossing of the North Arm of the Fraser since 1977.

Both politcal parties are goosestepping to major gridlock in Richmond. both parties simply have shrugged off global warming and climate change with "Lotuslandia" rubber on asphalt politics.

Eby simply doesn't care, as he is shoveling billions of dollars off the back of the truck in pre-election goodies.

Lots of cash, no substance.

Falcon, cloistered far too long in West Vancouver is fighting a 2001 election campaign in 2023.

No cash and no substance.

Sadly, this old lefty is voting Green and a pox on both the NDP and BC Liberal party's houses.

I'm not all the way to your place, yet...However, unlike the fed version, the prov Greens do run a decent ship, so it wouldn't take much (more) to get this old lefty there either.

As for Mr. Falcon...his biggest worry, I would imagine, is the prospect of any kind of 'credible'* right-sided party in this province...If such a thing does occur you I would be willing to take very short odds that the usual suspects will switch into ratf*cking mode immediately...After all, it's not like they haven't done it before, right?

(*of course, these days 'credible' means a very different thing than it used to when it comes to all things conservative)

MLA John Rustad would get a better reception if he joined the BC Socred Party
