What Do These Four Books Have In Common?

As you have probably already guessed...

These are just four of the 176 books that were removed from classroom bookshelves in Duval County Florida early last year thanks to governor Ron De Santis' bill that bars pornography and 'age inappropriate' material in schools.

So, given all that...

How are teachers dealing with this 'situation' in the Sunshine state?

Well, it would appear they've taken to hiding books in an attempt to avoid potential five year jail terms.

And, as you might expect, Donald Trump has decided he must attempt to one-up the Florida governor, who is his  potential Republican presidential rival in the 2024 primaries:

...Donald Trump flung out his own culture-war red meat in a video last week, calling on schools to certify only “patriotic teachers”...

After all, when banning and burning books is not enough, some group has to be singled out, shamed, or worse.

I guess it is important to prevent teachers from doing anything to teach children how to think for themselves.

"Update: Since PEN America published this list of book bans in Duval County, Florida, in December, we have received additional conflicting information on the precise nature of when, why, and for how long books from the Essential Voices Collection were kept off classroom shelves in 2022. We are working to update the details of this case."

EG--

Florida Man of a certain gubernatorial kind will do just about anything to keep everyone from teaching anyone, children included, from thinking for themselves.

_____

NVG--

The fact that anyone, anywhere has to work to update such 'details' is appalling, regardless.

Hopefully this will have the “Banned in Boston” effect and kids who would never have read them in the first place will now seek them out to see what they’re missing.

I wonder what bedtime stories Donald Trump read to his kids?

Lew--

Well, in Boston there were very, very fine folks who wanted to make sure all was safe, clean and sanctimonious in those many, many even finer parishes....Unfortunately, just not safe and clean for a great many kids of course...

As for what DJT read to his kids at bedtime?....In reality, likely nothing, ever...But...If he had ever been home/taken the time, I reckon he might have enjoyed reading them the speeches of Ivan Bosky about how greed really, really, really is good.

There are three other books which were banned, written by people of colour, who were/are major icons. The books discuss racism they encountered in their lives.

I'm waiting for them to start holding book burning in florida. Reminds me of how Hitler and the book burnings in Germany worked out so well for the racists.
DeSantos would be more dangerous than Trump as President. DeSantos knows how government works and is much smarter than Trump.

DeSantos has also gone after colleges and universities, firing liberal presidents of the university and replacing them with "right wingers".

Where will this all end? Guess he is ensuring racism remains alive and well in Florida.

It would not be surprising if many teachers and profs in Florida leave. Who can teach with the threat of being sent to jail if the Gov. doesn't like what you're teaching. Actually Florida at some levels is starting to look a lot like North Korea.

it boggles the mind. Didn't DeSantos read the American Constituion? it does have an opening line about freedom of speech.

Those who ban books, wish to ban ideas because ideas changes how we think and how we act.

What is pornography anyways, just a base display of humanity that for many, titillates and spawns ideas.

Politicians who ban books are actually banning education and the formation of ideas. They also want to ban history, if it is not molded to their expectations of history.

The American Fascists (and that is what they are) are being lead down the garden path to totalitarianism by a third rate Il Duce and those wanting to garner Fascist votes will ultimately ban books, because book spawn ideas and ideas and the freedom to think are the antithesis of Fascism
