First it is important to note what the Port Authority currently is and actually does.
The GStraight's Charlie Smith lays that out:
...Port Metro Vancouver's primary objective these days seems to be turning this region into North America's largest coal exporter. That has the potential not only to accelerate climate change, but also to undermine Vancouver's efforts to enhance its reputation and attract investment as a centre for clean, green technology...
So.
Why do the FedCons want their hand-picked coal hunta (b/w their favourite Snooklandians to run GranIsle anyway?
Well, the VSun's Daphne Bramham, who broke the story on Wednesday, thinks she knows:
...People who have been involved in discussions say the port’s primary reason for wanting control of Granville Island is all about public relations. How better to soften the port’s rough and dirty edges than to have the island as its public face?...
Thus, just like they did with elections, it would appear that the FedCons are following in the footsteps of the extremist right down south in trying to 'create their own reality' when it comes to public institutions.
_____
We note, with interest, that the former Golden Era public servant Mr. T. Richard Turner is a member of the Port Authority Board....Hey!...Could someone maybe be kinda/sorta thinking that it might be worth considering a Casino-Industrial-Complex on the south side of False Creek also?

And I thought the "Carbon-Neutral" BC Govt's idea behind exporting LNG was so that other countries can use less coal.
giving control of Granville Island to the port authority is a really nice way to make some real money on that piece of land. given it is no longer under the control of the feds, they can say, it wasn't our fault, blame it on the port authority. we can't do anything about it. Its not in our jurisdiction its got nothing to do with putting a pretty face on the pig of coal, its about the land and thus the money. Just wait to see what they do with it. Lets see how profits. any bets out there.
remember that lovely piece of land they used to have the Kits coast guard station on. someone is up to something, we just don't know what it is yet.
Oh i get it - burn coal to liquify nat frack gas.
e.a.f., the Kitsilano Coast Guard base closure is exactly what came to my mind when talk of turning over Granville Island surfaced. Sooner or later, the base property will come into play and it won’t be turned into a park.
Vancouver city council just passed a motion declaring, “the modern city of Vancouver was founded on the traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations and these territories were never ceded through treaty, war or surrender.”
If the First Nations claim to it is realized, they might decide it is a lovely place for a casino, without the necessity for all those silly approvals the city keeps imposing. And as a new neighbor with complimentary facilities and a director with experience in casino matters on the Board, would the Port Authority object?
Lew's scenario is analogous to what will soon play out in Pacific Spirit Park (sans the casino, of course - at least so far).
