A Rainbow Comes To Topeka

The Westboro Baptist Church, led by the notorious Mr. Fred Phelps, has a website called 'God Hates Fags' (no link on purpose).

They also have a new neighbour:

For too long, the Westboro Baptist Church has been targeting the LGBTQ community with messages of hate and discrimination. Often, protesting American soldiers’ funerals and organizations that support equality. This faction preaches extremism in our communities and directly targets our youth. To combat their messages of hate and to support equality and anti-bullying initiatives in schools and in our community, Planting Peace has established the Equality House in Topeka, KS.

Located directly across from the Westboro Baptist Church, the House is a symbol of equality, peace, and positive change. The house, which is painted the colors of the Pride flag, will serve as the resource center for all Planting Peace equality and anti-bullying initiatives and will stand as a visual reminder of our commitment, as global citizens, to equality for all...

Gosh creativity and a little colour is a wonderful thing.

While I find the Westboro group nothing short of disgusting, what they preach is actually the truth of religion. Others sugar coat it with the absurdity of "love the sinner hate the sin" but essentially say the same thing. The catholic church is no better than these ignorant folks, they just market this crap a little better to a wider audience. The other "loving" religions just choose to ignore what the bible actually says. If we get real about the bible, and it pretty much captures everyone and throws them into the pits of an imaginary hell if they're bad boys and girls. The political right of the world of religion have done a brilliant marketing job of creating those scary, marriage threatening gays in order to hide the truth that the bible throws pretty much everybody under the bus. End of rant....

"drf" sent a link to a local news story from Destin, FL. Apparently, the Planting Peace organization is based "just down the road a piece" from our place in Florida.

A well-appreciated instance where sanity overcomes the prevailing rabid-repuglicanism of the area . . . .

I wonder if this would work with one of my neighbours, who thinks anyone with brown skin is "one of those east indians who cant be trusted" and who plans to bring her two young daughters to a 'traditional school' where they 'wont have to be around those people.'

When I asked her who 'those people' were, she said: 'You know, those homosexuals and other races who dont live as God intended'.

I asked her what she would do if one her daughters revealed herself to be lesbian later on in life, and her reply was that it couldnt happen, because in traditional school they teach you love is what happens between a man and a woman only.'......

Oy!!!

Needless to say that was the last conversation we had....

She needs a house like this across from her ! : ) Love it!!
